Brown, a communication law attorney, is a longtime advocate for the representation of minorities in the media. He replaces Andrew Schwartzman, who served as MAP’s president for decades and will remain as a senior vice president and policy director.
Brown outlined ambitious plans for his new role in a statement.
“I plan to concentrate on expanding MAP’s sources of funding and, substantively, on highlighting and combating structural barriers to objective news reporting and on supporting optimal and ubiquitous access to the Internet by all demographics,” Brown said.
In addition to Wiley Rein, Brown also practiced law at Steptoe & Johnson. He has also participated in several telecommunications and media startups and is a former in-house counsel for The Washington Post Co.’s broadcast operations.
