A new judicial rule in New York state changes the way elected judges are assigned cases. Beginning July 15th, an elected judge cannot hear a case where a lawyer, the lawyer’s firm, or their clients have contributed $2,500 or more individually or $3,500 or more collectively to the judge’s campaign in the previous two years. The new rule helps to eliminate perception that “big money” influences judicial decisions.
