George Clooney Arrested During Protest at Sudanese Embassy

Actor George Clooney was arrested outside of the Sudanese embassy in Washington D.C. on Friday. Clooney and at least one congressman were among those arrested outside of the embassy. It has been reported that the arrests were anticipated and it was Clooney’s goal in an effort to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis occurring in Sudan right now. Clooney’s father was also arrested on Friday during the protest. The group of people in front of the embassy was protesting the block of supplies and humanitarian aide setup by the country. Clooney was placed in the back of a police car after being handcuffed.

“They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children,” the publicist for Clooney said in a statement. “They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.”

Also arrested during the protest were Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), former Rep. Tom Andrews (D-Maine), Nick Clooney (George Clooney’s father), NAACP President Ben Jealous and Martin Luther King III.

The video embedded in this article was taken by the Huffington Post exclusively. Clooney said the following after the arrest:

“The goal for today is the same goal its been all along and will continue to be and not be accomplished today or anytime in the near future, but it’s a job that we have to continually do which is raise attention; protest the idea of a government attacking and killing its own innocent men, women and children and allowing aid to get in now because in the next few months it could be the greatest humanitarian crisis in the world and thats the important thing.”
