Bicycle Embedded in Tree in Washington State

The lost bicycle of a young boy has created a much talked about roadside natural art piece on Vashon Island in Washington state. The catch is that the bicycle was lost over 50 years ago, according to a report from ABC News.

Embedded into a tree roughly 50 feet behind the Sound Food Cafe off Vashon Highway, a 1950s-era bicycle is stuck inside a tree. Helen Puz was widowed in 1954 and received the bicycle as a gift from a member of the town.

“People were very sympathetic and generous,” Puz reportedly wrote in a document on display at the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum. “We were given a girl’s bike and my 8-year-old son Don seemed the natural one to ride it.”

The island is located between Seattle and Tacoma. Don Puz was not happy with riding the bicycle around the island, since it was a girl’s bicycle. Don told his mom one day that he lost his bicycle. Since it was a girl’s bicycle, both Helen and Don decided not to go looking for it.

Decades later, Helen found out what happened to her son’s bicycle. Helen is now 99 and was reading an article in the local newspaper, the Beachcomber, that discussed the discovery of the bicycle. The bicycle is five feet up in the air inside a tree. The tree grew around the bicycle.

  1. It looks as though the bike was lifted and hooked over a branch when the boy first hid it there giving the appearance of the tree lifting the bicycle off the ground – which of course the tree can’t do.
