The discounter Groupon, has an online promotion coupon and according to CNN News they have put out a news release announcing “Groupon Celebrates Presidents Day by Honoring Alexander Hamilton,” and offering $10 off of all local deals above $40.

The problem with this is that Alexander Hamilton was never a U.S. president. Alexander Hamilton was a Founding Father of the United States, chief of staff to General Washington, one of the most influential interpreters and promoters of the Constitution, the founder of the nation’s financial system, and the founder of the first American political party. President George Washington appointed Hamilton as the first United States Secretary of the Treasury on September 11, 1789. Hamilton was the primary author of the economic policies of the George Washington administration, especially the funding of the state debts by the Federal government, the establishment of a national bank, a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Britain. He became the leader of the Federalist Party.

When it was suggested that Groupon’s promotion was a joke, the company responded via its Twitter account by saying, “Joke? We’d never joke about saving $10! #AllKindsOfSerious” The company, Groupon, reported CNN News, said “We’re shocked by this implication – Shocked!” Don’t try learning American history through Groupon. Revisionist history aside, a good Groupon discount is not something to be ignored.
