The United States recorded its first-ever Olympic title in the ice dance on Monday when the duo of Meryl Davis and Charlie White grabbed the gold medal in the event, according to the Associated Press.
The champions from 2010, Canadian duo Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, grabbed the silver medal. The Russian duo of  Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov took home the bronze medal.
In Vancouver, Davis and White took home silver. Now, they have overcome their training partners from Detroit in the Canadian couple.
Davis and White recorded a score of 116.63 in the free dance to complete the event with a first-place score of 195.52. Their score was just 4.53 points in front of Virtue and Moir.
The duo from the United States began skating together in 1997 and were almost perfect for the gold on Monday.
In regards to their performance, White said, “That in itself justified 17 years of hard work.”
The duo holds one medal from each level after winning bronze in the brand new team event this year in Sochi.
It looks as though Ilinykh and Katsalapov will be a formidable duo for some time since she is 19 and he is 22. They finished ninth at the world championships last year, but go home with a medal from the Winter Olympics this year.
