Samsung Wants to Shed its “Fast Follower” Image

According to the founder of Samsung Group, the meaning of the word Samsung means “Tri-Star” or three stars. The word “three” represents something “big, numerous and powerful;” the “stars” mean eternity.

Samsung Electronics is the world’s largest information technology company measured by 2012 revenues, and 4th in market value. Bloomberg News reported that, Samsung says about 25 percent of the company’s workforce is dedicated to research and development, which results in thousands of new patents per year. Samsung has a powerful influence on South Korea’s economic development, politics, media and culture.

It has been reported that 10 of Samsung Electronics’ top executives met in Shanghai last December. Samsung has a reputation for being a copycat. Apple Inc. is currently suing Samsung yet again for infringing five of its patents. According to a report from Bloomberg News, The Samsung Company is looking to shed its “fast follower” image and become recognized as an innovator instead.

The Times of India has reported that, Apple Inc. and Sssssssss Electronics have battled in court for nearly three years over their smartphone technology. March 14, 2013, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S4 phone. According to Bloomberg News, The Samsung Company has declined to comment on the executives meeting in Shanghai or on its rival companies.

Samsung, the South Korean multinational conglomerate company says in an e-mailed statement that, “Samsung has always been an innovator and has led the development of core technologies and products over many years,” they say that “We contest the idea that Samsung is simply a fast follower. Samsung’s success in the fast-evolving and competitive technology industry came from our commitment to R&D, innovations in products and designs, in-house engineering and manufacturing as well as convergence capability across smart devices.”
