Oregon Man Uses Nunchucks to Attack Family Members

Nunchucks

Summary: Nunchucks can be lethal when used correctly in martial arts. When the everyday person tries to use them, they can still inflict serious injuries — as one Oregon family learned first-hand.

A Lafayette, Oregon, man decided he would use nunchucks to get his point across. The 28-year-old, Kasey David Heermann, attacked his mother and sister with the martial arts weapon.

Heermann will face charges on one count each of first-degree assault, attempt to commit a crime, and unlawful use of a weapon. All of the charges are felonies, with the most serious being the one for first degree assault. It is a Class A felony that, under Measure 11, carries a minimum prison sentence of 90 months. He is currently being held on $465,000 bail, pending arraignment in the circuit court.

According to the incident report, the police received a call about a domestic dispute on Saturday. When deputies arrived they found two women with serious head injuries. Heermann’s mother was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Portland’s Legacy Emanuel Hospital for critical injuries to her head and eye. His sister was taken by ambulance to the Willamette Valley Medical Center for serious injuries.

While Heermann has not said why he attacked his family members, authorities suspect mental health issues are a factor.

Nunchucks originated in Japan and consist of two short sticks attached by a rope or chain. They are currently banned in Arizona, California, Massachusetts, and New York.
