Summary: Illinois residents with four DUI convictions will be able to apply for a restricted permit.
Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a new law that will go into effect January 1 that gives drivers with multiple DUI convictions the opportunity to get a restricted permit. To get the permit, the offender must first prove that they have been drug and alcohol-free for the last three years. After four convictions, Illinois residents lose their licenses.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office released new data showing that over 5,000 state residents have had their license revoked and been convicted of drunken driving four times. A restricted permit will require the driver to have a breath ignition-interlock device where they can only drive during certain hours of the day and for certain reasons.
Other countries have much stricter penalties for those that get caught driving while intoxicated. If you get caught in Australia for the first time, you will have your license taken away for six months. If you get caught again, your license is taken away for good. The first offense in England results in a minimum one year license loss plus fines and up to six months in prison. Many of these countries also have lower BAC levels, some at .01.
