Heenan Blaikie Announces Decision to Wind Up Operations

A statement was issued Wednesday night by the partners at the law firm of Heenan Blaikie LLP, which is based in Canada, according to the Financial Post. The statement says that the partners want to wind up the operations of the firm.

“This decision follows an in-depth analysis of the available restructuring options in the current context of Canada’s legal services market,” the firm announced in the statement. “An orderly wind-up will make it possible to continue serving the Firm’s clients without interrupting or disrupting service and to ensure a harmonious transfer of their files to other law firms. It should be noted that several practice groups and even entire offices will continue to operate under new names.”

The firm was established in 1973 by Roy Heenan, Donald Johnston and Peter Blaikie. This announcement seemed to be obvious since the firm announced over the weekend that it lost almost one-third of its partners.

After the massive departure over the weekend, more partners left the firm on Wednesday, which has caused the firm to disband its operations. Partners left the Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto offices to join Fasken Martineau Dumoulin LLP  in Montreal. Five real estate lawyers and two financial services lawyers were hired at Dentons Canada LLP.
