Maryland House Legalizes Gay Marriage

The never ending debate about same-sex rights, has taken another turn, with a slender victory for the proponents of same sex-marriages, when the Maryland House voted in their favor. Considering that a similar debate failed last year, the victory drew loud applause with lots of back thumping and hugs.

However, their joy may be short-lived, as it becoming law is subject to voters mandate in November, later this year. The Republican minority leader Anthony O’Donnell accepted that the celebrations at this juncture were premature and commented, that they were “beginning a process, not ending a process. The citizens of Maryland will have the final say.”

If the bill is indeed passed, it would make Maryland the eighth state in the US, along with Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and the Washington Capitol district that allow same-sex couples to marry.

Whether same sex marriages should be endorsed and legally recognized is both a religious and political subject. Its opponents believe that marriage is a sacred union between man and woman. It is the way God intended it to be and has its roots in the Ten Commandments.

Most Christians see marriage as the will of God – that it is His gift and a sacred institution, that must not be defiled, by allowing same-sex marriages, which is something that politicians do to suit and fit their personal political agendas and not because they believe in it. Even President Obama is non-committal when he admits, that he supports the idea of legalizing same-sex marriages, although at a personal level his beliefs place him in opposition to it.

However, proponents of the same-sex rights theory, believe that everybody has the right to the quest of happiness and if a man marrying a man or a woman marrying a woman makes them happy, what does God have to do with it? Moreover, they argue, if two people love one another and want to unite and share their destinies, it is cause to be feted and celebrated. Call it “marriage”, “living together” or anything you want, it does not matter. Same sex-unions hurts no one – you can support it or oppose it. It is matter of personal belief and choice and no individual has the right to interfere or meddle in personal affairs.

If you were to go strictly by God’s word, He says in Genesis 1:28, “Be fruitful and increase in number” – wonder how the same-sex couples are going to do that.

I wonder how a 50 year old woman and a 52 year old man are going to do that? How about a 70 year old woman and a 75 year old man? How about a woman who can’t conceive due to medical issues? How about a man who can’t? This is, by far, the stupidest comment I’ve ever heard. If you want to see the destruction of “traditional” marriage (whatever that is)look at the current divorce rate and Kim Kardashian. I don’t hear anyone talking about this.

Shall we go back to the days when women were property, perhaps, as they were when that Bible quote was written also? I’m just aghast at people’s idiocy about religion and our tolerance of sheer ignorance. It’s about time we put a stop to that in the press.

We also shouldn’t allow anyone who is too old to have children to marry either. Or who is unable to bear children. Or who just doesn’t want to have children. Those should be just as illegal by that logic.

  3. Your belief in your god is a chosen behavior. Likewise with the choice to marry as one would. Just as our country was founded on the principle of personal liberty and personal freedom in choice of religion, it was founded on the principles of personal liberty and personal freedom in how to order one’s family and household. Marriage is not just about procreation, or would you outlaw marriage where one potential spouse was barren? How about between aged couples beyond the age of procreation? If marriage is only about being “fruitful and multiplying” then shouldn’t marriage end when such activity is no longer possible? I don’t expect meaningful responses, as you have already shown yourself out as an ideologue who would prattle about the myths of bronze age sheep herders who were incapable of conceiving a world that existed more than a few years beyond their immediate forebearers.

  4. This was a good article – until the last line. I can’t tell if you’re being facetious, ignorant or just rude in that line. There are plenty of ways gay couples have children, including their own genetic offspring, and many of the issues raised about gay relationships not being equal to straight marriages have been ABOUT children, custody and visitation rights. It’s also an extremely dangerous precedent to argue that the issue of who can get married depends on who can have children, as that disallows couples from getting married who are infertile due to age, disease or choice, even if they are straight. I really hope you were just being facetious to use a biblical reference at all, but please make that clearer next time!
