82-year Old Boston Mobster’s 60-year Old Girlfriend, Ready to Plead Guilty

Dreaded Boston mobster Bulger, 82, who fled Boston in late 1994, was arrested on June 22, 2011, in his California hideout in Santa Monica with about 30 firearms, $822,000 cash hidden in walls and his 60-year old girlfriend. His girlfriend Grieg was a former dental hygienist. The couple was living under the pseudonyms of Charles and Carol Gasko for the past 15 years in their apartment close to the Pacific.

In the related case of USA v. Greig, U.S. District Court, Massachusetts, no. 11-cr-10286, authorities on Monday, documents claiming Greig would plead guilty. Her trial was scheduled on May 7.

In a letter to Kevin Reddington, Greig’s attorney, U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz wrote that Greig will plead guilty “in no event later than March 14.”

The mobster, James “Whitey” Bulger is accused of 19 murders as well as other crimes dating back to the 70s. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. His trial would start in November.

Greig has been charged with harboring a fugitive, conspiracy to commit identity fraud, and identity fraud. She would have a pretrial hearing on Wednesday.

In a seven page statement, duly signed, Greig, 60, has described a “close, personal relationship” with Bulger and that she agreed to “harbor and conceal” Bulger along with others – an arrangement that lasted from January 1995 until the day of their arrest.

Prosecutors alleged that Greig had used at least ten different aliases to shop, pay bills and obtain medicine for Bulger. In her statement, she wrote, “I engaged in conduct that was intended to help Bulger avoid detection from law enforcement and to provide him with support and assistance during his flight.”

Bulger belonged to the last generation of mobsters leading an Irish-American organized crime operation based in Boston. He used to head the Winter Hill Gang.

In Bulger’s first appearance in court in July following his present arrest, Bulger showed a confident attitude. Both of Bulger’s brothers William “Billy” and John “Jackie” Bulger were present in the courtroom, as well as many alleged victims of crimes committed by Bulger.

Though the prosecutors wanted Bulger’s hearing to start on September 14, the defense attorney said the timetable was unrealistic.

Bulger’s defense attorney, J.W. Carney told reporters “The prosecutors have had 20 years to prepare for the trial. I’ve been on the case now about five days. I haven’t received a single piece of paper from the government regarding discovery. So, I have no idea how long this trial will take.”

Charges against Bulger include murdering a series of rival gang leaders and the strangling of a former associate’s girlfriend. He is also charged with drug dealing, extortion, money laundering and conspiracy.
