Prison versus Education and the Numbers are Staggering

cuba_prison

Summary: We have stumbled across a video that discusses the cost of keeping a prisoner in jail for one year and what it takes to educate a child for one year.

Even though we have found a video that discusses the cost of operating prisons and founding education, there are still plenty of numbers out there that are not included.

The video will throw a ton of numbers at you, but it is a must-watch, especially if you are a tax-paying adult who contributes to the education taxes in your hometown.

All of the numbers come from the state of California, where the state has built 22 prisons, but only one University of California campus. Another disheartening number from the video is that there are 500 percent more people in prison since 1980.

Some one-in-five prisoners are in jail due to minor crimes such as shoplifting or marijuana possession.

It costs $62,300 per year to keep a person in jail in California. The state spends just $9,100 per year, per student for the K-12 grades.

These numbers are absolutely staggering and are present not only in California, but all across the country.
