Over the past year or so of writing this blog, I have been slowly and slowly mentioning my faith and tossing it into blog posts. I have always been afraid to really discuss it in this space because I’m worried about alienating some of my readers. As much as I love everyone’s support and want to make each and every one of you feel like you can relate to me, I also have to remember to be completely and totally myself.
I am a Christian. It has slowly become a larger and larger part of my life until I realized that it is my life. I am here because of God and my purpose here is to serve him, which means that my faith falls into everything that I do. Well, I try to do so, but old habits die hard (in other words, I’m no where near perfect!). I like to consider it a journey, or a practice, like yoga. You’re always improving, always working, and can always return if you fall away.
So why am I telling you all of this? Because I wanted to address the changes that some of my older readers are probably noticing, especially in today’s post.
On Monday night at my small group’s weekly bible study we discussed the idea of following God’s plan for our lives, and using the skills and talents he has given us to serve Him. If you aren’t a Christian, or religious at all, think of it this way: what is your purpose? How can you help others with your gifts?
After going through some questions in our book, I felt like I found my way of serving God, at least for the time being, and I wanted to pose some questions to get you all thinking.
What are your talents? We’re not just talking playing piano, or scientific research, or drawing, etc. I’m including anything, such as communicating with people, speaking, listening, immersing yourself into new cultures, or even being great with kids.
For me, I felt like some of my best talents are in writing, reaching out to others, and organizing and bringing people together.
What makes your heart hurt? What troubles do you hear about and it just makes your heart break? Is it orphans? Is it eating disorders? Is it animal cruelty? I’ve learned through my own experiences that the things that upset you the most in your life are usually the things you want to help other people with.
For me, it has been self-love and confidence, finding faith, eating disorders and anxiety.
How can you combine the two to serve God or others? You have skills and you have things that you want to fix or help in the world – how can you use your skills to improve upon your community?
This is where my light-bulb went off – writing. I can use writing in my blog, and maybe even a book for young women, to discuss the subjects I mentioned above. Writing is my best medium and my best form of communication.
You might not have all of your answers today, but keep this in the back of your mind. Maybe write down a few ideas, brainstorm. Sleep on it, think about it over the next week or month and hopefully you’ll find something that you’re passionate about. It might be a career, it might be a hobby or a volunteer activity, but find something that helps others and brings you joy.
Do you want to share any of your answers to these questions?
YES YES YES!!!! I just love you!!!
Love this, Katie! Such a simple and unique way to finding your purpose. As bloggers, it’s tough to know what we should put out there and what’s best kept private. I commend you for having the courage to let your authentic self shine. We love you girl! xo
Thanks, Kristi! You’re so sweet!
Awww I LOVE YOU! Thank you!
This is definitely something to think about! For me I think a lot of it is listening and helping with solutions. Writing is a form I am working on.
I love this. Writing is my answer too. I’m still trying to turn it into a full-time career, but in the meantime, I know that I’m hopefully touching at least one person with my blog!
Love that, Emily!
It certainly took me a little time to think it over – helping people with solutions sounds like a great talent! Everyone needs a friend like that 🙂
Beautiful post- thank you for sharing! I love that quote. It’s so true- the things that really tug at you are where you are most able to give back and serve. And where you feel most fulfilled in serving!
I love it! I spent tons of time praying and seeking God’s call for me a few years back while going through health-coaching school. Having gone through an ED myself, my heart ached for women battling disordered eating of any and all types. That led me into what I’m pursuing now, and I know it’s where God means to have me. It feels so good to be in that place, right?
That’s so great that you’re in such a good place, Jaclyn! I hope I can get there soon!
Thank you for your kind words Laura, I’m glad you liked it!
Love this!! Perfect timing, considering the whole ‘almost graduation and have to start thinking about a real person job’ thing. Like you, I considering writing to be my best medium. And, helping and supporting people in recovery from an eating disorder is so, so important to me. Whether I’m able to turn these things into a career or keep it as a hobby (through my blog) it is something that is always going to be important to me. Thanks for sharing!
I’m glad you know where you want to help!
I serve best through my career. Love what I do and I’m grateful to get to do it each day.
That’s so great, Divya!
I love everything about this post! I was just thinking and praying about this in my quiet time today; about how I need to stop focusing so much on me so I can better serve God and his purpose by focusing on other’s needs!
That’s great! Definitely something many of us can work on
THIS. So beautiful, Katie! I can’t wait to see the continued beauty that comes from this reflection! <3
Thank you Annette!
[…] How Can You Serve […]
Ohhh Katie, I love, love, LOVE this! These questions really made me think and reflect on what I’m doing and how I’m impacting others. Thank you for sharing this with us! Love you!
Awww thanks, Ash! Love you too!
yes! serving by encouragement or making a meal. I love to do both, and i hope that God uses me in each!
Those are great things to do – haha I’d love some of your meals!
I love that you are weaving your faith more into the blog! I write about my faith on my blog, and while I worry about alienating people, I know that I have to share my faith with others. It’s what God calls us to do!
I love these questions–definitely something I’ve been thinking about lately (my purpose and how to fulfill it) and I think these questions will help lead me to that!
Thanks Amy!!
Thank you so much for this post!! This has something I have been really struggling with for a while- trying to determine my purpose and how to live it out. I’m learning though that it’s on God’s timing and not mine! I think I might know what my purpose is but I have no idea how to get there or make it happen, but the great thing is, is that God does! So thankful that he is orchestrating it all!
Although I’m not a religious person, your post resonated with me. I believe in the same principles/questions. We all have unique attributes and causes we’re passionate about. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Christian, Buddhist, Atheist, etc. I think we all seek the answer as to why we’re here and what we’re supposed to do with this life…
Good for you for sharing your faith…it’s you being you!
