WIAW–Traveling to Chicago

Salut!

WHEW! Yesterday was quite the whirlwind of a travel day, I left my house in Kansas City at 7:30am, flew to Minneapolis, only had a 30 min layover, flew to Chicago, took the train to school, took the bus home and finally walked into my apartment at 6:45pm, still lugging around a heavy backpack and a waaaayyyy too heavy duffel.

I. Am. Pooped.

Seeing as I’m ready for bed (writing this Tuesday night), we’re going to do a slightly shorter version of today’s WIAW, which includes my food from today: travel day! If you’re new to What I Ate Wednesday, head on over to Peas and Crayons, where you can learn what it’s all about and see the other participating bloggers!

Peas and Crayons

1. Breakfast:

Started of with a hot cup of water with lemon

And then brought a piece of Udi’s GF bread with Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter, a Chobani bite and coffee with me in the car on the way to the airport.

2. Snack:

I got to the airport plenty early and by the time I was in the middle of my first flight my stomach was grumbling, so I happily took (and ate) the two peanut packets they gave me (plus more coffee).

3. Lunch #1

I had very little time in Minneapolis to find food, so once I found my gate I saw a Starbucks a couple gates down and hurried over there. I got an oatmeal (not my picture, I forgot) and put the nut mix into it, plus some cut up strawberries that I had brought in my backpack from home. The strawberries were sooooo good! Perfect addition.

4. Lunch #2:

After my second flight, taking the train into the city, walking to school and then reading for about an hour, I was getting really hungry. I didn’t want to carry my bags somewhere again so I just threw together a salad from our school’s cafeteria. It included chicken, parmesan cheese, beets, carrots, bell pepper slices, olives, and then red vinegar and olive oil for dressing. I also had an apple which I at a bit later.

I also had a piece of dark chocolate while reading (this x2):

5. Dinner:

Whomp whomp… I had very little food in my apartment when I got home but was thrilled to see that I had a sweet potato, salmon and my greens hadn’t gone bad. Unfortunately after cooking and cutting open the sweet potato I saw it had a couple mealworms… Threw it out. Couldn’t even eat the good parts. Not much grosses me out, but bugs in my food sure does. Also, part of the salmon was just… weird. I think the worms put my senses on alert. I had most of the salmon and all the greens (with extra ketchup…).

6. Dessert/Snack:

Seeing as my dinner was so… filling, I was ready for some peach sorbet (frozen peaches, ice, stevia, salt, xantham gum all mixed in my Vitamix), which I topped with chocolate sauce (sunwarrior protein powder mixed with stevia and cocoa powder) and coconut crumbles (coconut flour, stevia, vanilla, and water – usually almond milk but I didn’t have any).

Followed by some coconut butter and some more coconut crumbles, and this time I made some cinnamon sauce (exchange cocoa powder above with cinnamon).

There you have it! Workout for the day: dragging those bags around! I’m about to fall asleep right now!

Do you have a rolling bag or a duffel when you carry on? (I own rolling bag but my brother borrowed *cough*stole*cough* mine years ago…)

What do you usually grab if you have to eat in the airport or eat fast food?

  1. While I have nothing against the occasional fast food onion rings or burger (everything in moderation, right?) If I’m feeling something a bit healthier, Subway is usually my go-to. Or Wendy’s salads with a few modifications – they’re expensive but surprisingly tasty for a fast-food salad.

  2. For some reason I really love salads from salad bars. Yours looks like it was delicious! I have a rolling bag that I use for my carry on. I’ve done a moderate amount of traveling and like to pack everything in my carry on if I can, so having the rolling bag has been great.

  3. Just hearing about those meal worms in the sweet potato gives me the heeby jeebies. Ugh. I can’t even… Haha.

Moving on… You definitely made up for your dinner with your snacks! That sorbet looks awesome.

  4. 1. I LOVE that peanuts picture. I seriosuly cracked up for like 10 min. WHAT IS THAT?

    2. Gimmie back that coconut butter! I want some right now! Or just bring some to my cube..

  5. 1) I have a duffel bag that came with me all across Europe when I studied abroad. It has patches all over it from all of the places it’s been to. Love that thing!

    2) I usually get a Naked Juice and some sort of energy / meal bar at the airport. And I also pack a LOT of my own snacks (nuts, granola bars, etc.) I’m too picky and airport food is too over-priced!

    • I love having it every morning! And just FYI, your name automatically links to your blog, no need to add the link in your comment, that usually sends it to spam 🙁

  6. I got a set of really chic luggage for a wedding gift and I LOVE it. I have a duffel and a rollie, so I have options. BEST GIFT EVER

I usually pack oatmeal packets and protein powder or nut butter so I can make a quick breakfast with just hot water.

    • haha thanks! And yes, I wanted a sweet potato so badly but now I am totally freaked out about them. This is what I get for trying to buy organic…

  7. Ai girl your day just wore me our haha. I use a little wheeled bag for my carry on and grab subway when on the go. My first choice would be panera but i have yet to see that in an airport!

    • Haha I totally agree – it’s a little small for my taste! Sometimes I buy a banana too, slice it up and add that for a little more volume.

    • I do use vanilla sunwarrior! I really don’t know the ratio, I don’t measure and just use my spoon. It’s probably 2:1 or 3:1, with more sunwarrior.

  8. Yum! That sorbet dessert looks awesome! Must try it!
I’m not the best person to ask about traveling… I overpack! But I also have 2 kids in tow along with hubby. I have spinner suitcases bought recently at Costco. Love! I do a backpack carry on or one of the spinner small suitcases. I hate traveling with food allergies. I’m always starving! Not many gf options in airport that are easy to find during quick layover.
