Thursday Thoughts

Sooo…. Anyone notice some odd things happening on the blog yesterday?

Umm yea.

So here it goes: I decided to switch over to self-hosted rather than hosting through WordPress (moved from wordpress.com to wordpress.org). Please ignore this jargon if it’s too much. Lol it’s too much for me. Anyway, most people pay someone to do this. I am cheap. I decided to do it myself! Hahahahahahaha that was fun. I did all the switching over stuff at the end of last week and it just said it would take around a week to switch over so I put it in the back of my mind and moved on.

Well, this morning when I tried to publish my WIAW post I was greeted with a surprise: NOTHING WAS WORKING!!??!!? AHHHHHH. So it switched over, but I had no idea what to do at that point. I literally spent my entire day trying to get everything corrected. For a while it was directing to a different URL and I had no way to tell all my readers that the URL had changed… So I was freaking out. I spent countless hours on live chat with support people and finally got every thing done. Not sure what happened exactly during my classes… oops. I was a ball of anxiety. Silly to be anxious over, but I was having a rough day as it was and this was just one more big thing to deal with.

I’m sure you all wanted to hear that? Haha, I try and be honest. Anyway, the blog may change a bit more over the weekend when I have some more time to work on things, so I apologize if things get funny when you try and visit! It’s a work in progress! And if anyone knows things about bluehost, wordpress.org and especially plug-ins (WTF is a plug-in!?!?) please feel free to let me know!

So now that I’ve shared some of yesterday’s stress, here are some Thursday Thoughts to ramble on about and relax our minds! Yessss. This is  my favorite post of the week.

1. This is my new favorite song. It was basically on repeat yesterday:

2. I have started reading MWF Seeking BFF, which is the new book this month for our Chicago Healthy Living Blogger Book Club. Lol that was a long title. So far I’m finding it fascinating. Feel free to read along, I’ll definitely be posting a review! Probably sometime around October 1st.

3. Molly is so bizarre. She’ll find the weirdest places to sit. Here she was trying to get closer to my brother to get him to pet her. Totally comfortable.

4. In Colorado Springs the people who owned our house before us had a wooden dog… My mother has named it Chief (after the Kansas City Chiefs, obviously) and when my brother was there he took several pictures of chief in various places around the house. He has been group-texting them to the family sporadically over the past few weeks. It’s fantastic.

5. Do you ever have days where you just can’t keep up with your reader? Yesterday was definitely one of those days, I spent so much time working on my blog that I barely read any others. P.S. I read a lot of blogs that I don’t comment on for time’s sake, so don’t be surprised if I pop out of no where on your comments section one day!

6. Two more blog posts were added to my reader in the time it took me to “snip” that picture and add it on to my post. This is INSANE. Can you tell I’m running out of thoughts? My brain is not functioning well anymore.

7. No way this workout (seen on pinterest) burns 100 calories. I don’t even burn a full 100 calories running a mile. This is so not equivalent to a mile. Check out Ashley’s guest post on this subject!

go. now.

8. Thanks to Caitlin’s post, I found out about Jog.Fm, which is AMAZING. I’ve never been able to find somewhere that lists the bpm of songs! Now I can compile a great playlist for the marathon that will keep my going at the right pace!

9. I LOVE this movie. Did anyone else watch this movie all the time? It was on TV a lot, I swear. I think it’s still on Netflix open streaming… maybe. I watched it a few months ago. Love. I saw this quote on pinterest and had to share.

From the movie The Little Princess

10. Yes, I got on pinterest to find more thoughts. Don’t judge. So all these fall clothes are making me want to SHOP like a mad woman. It’s dangerous seeing as I have no income… Good thing I have very little time to shop. Bad thing I have access to the internet and online shopping…

Plaid, cardigan, boots.

Does your reader ever overwhelm you?

What’s your favorite song right now?

  1. Computer stuff totally boggles my mind so I’m super impressed you managed to switch over your blog to a self hosted domain on your own! It sounds super stressful though. I hope you’re getting everything figured out! 🙂

Ugh and I know what you mean about keeping up with my reader. I only keep a limited number of blogs in my reader so that I only feel “obligated” to read those. All the rest I keep in my favourites menu so if I have extra time, I’ll read those ones. Otherwise I think it would be easy to let blog reading take up ALL my time lol!

  2. Funny enough, my GoogleReader overwhelmed me about 5 min ago. I couldn’t believe it!! It’s almost like everyone realized that summer was over and decided to get back to it all of a sudden. Not complaining in the least though!! I love reading them all!

As for self-hosted — I’m by no means an expert. But I started out self-hosted so I wouldn’t have to switch. From what I understand, plug-ins are special “add-on” features that are totally optional that you can elect to include to enhance your page. (So, I know that for wordpress. org there’s one called YARPP, which will provide the link for similar posts of yours based on content.) There are about a trillion out there. They’re mostly useful if you’re looking for something in particular. Otherwise, I find them intimidating!! haha. When I started out, I’d never even heard of the word “widget” … I was SO intimidated!!

  3. I just looked at Jog.fm….looks fantastic. I’m downloading it now. I usually use FitRadio, but I’m going to try this one and see how it compares.

I rarely go through my blog reader fully. I don’t feel obligated really, I just read what I want and come back another time.

Thanks for addressing “100 calories”…haha. I also see recipes on Pinterest that I know the nutritional information is wrong. “chocolate peanut butter shake….made with protein powder and a banana….60 calories”….um, NO. Do the math.

    • Haha I read it!!! On my phone though, which makes it hard to comment. I so prefer workout shorts, I totally agree that they make my legs look more athletic.

  4. I am not computer/blog/tech savvy at all, but I’ve figured out a few things here and there when I switched over to self hosted, so let me know if you have any questions. Plug ins are essentially little add ons you can put on your blog. For example, if you want to add a Pinterest button, you’ll need to get a plug in for it. Make sense? Kind of? Haha.

I just wrote in my post today that my Google Reader is about to explode too! This week has just been busy busy. I hope today is a better day for you! xoxo

  5. It took me awhile to even start using Google Reader. I’m always behind the times when it comes to computer/technology in general. I have a feeling my Reader will continue to grow now that I actually have a blog of my own and keep discovering new ones!
The scarf in that last picture is SO CUTE. I always love the look of scarves but never end up buying any for myself. Not sure why…

  6. I’m the one blogger in the entire blog world who doesn’t use Google Reader, so I can’t say I’ve ever felt overwhelmed by it haha. I legitimately like going to every individual blog every single day, which means I’m sometimes miss posts, but it keeps me from being all, “OMG MISSED THAT POST MUST GO BACK AND COMMENT NOW.” Haha. That would definitely happen if I hopped on the Reader train, so for now I’ll continue to read blogs the old fashioned way 🙂

  7. You are brave to tackle the blog transfer by yourself!! All that stuff doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Other than if you know what you’re doing you can make a self-hosted blog a lot more customized.

I’ve been feeling very overwhelmed with my Google Reader, too! I think it was the holiday weekend. Too much time away from the computer. Oh, wait, that’s a good thing. Right?

  8. I hate when I have a busy weekend and then I check my google reader Monday morning and it’s like ‘Jen, read these 573737493836593 blog posts that were published this weekend’ woof!

It seems every day I have a new favorite song. The one I’m loving today- because it got me pumped to run is Run by Flo Rida

  9. Hey Katie, I found your blog the other day and am enjoying it! I pretty much never comment on blogs, but I just had to share that I squealed when I saw the quote from A Little Princess. That movie was definitely on TV all the time and I watched it every single time and danced around my living room, imagining that I was a little abandoned rich girl living in an attic. I actually watched it within the last year on Netflix when I realized it was on there too! And…I’m 27 now 🙂

    • Hi Gloria! I’m glad you’re enjoying my blog, I LOVE hearing that from new readers! And I will probably still be watching that movie when I’m 60! haha

  10. YAY! Congrats on self-hosting. Even though it’s been quite an ordeal, it sounds like you’re getting everything figured out. And I admire you for taking on the task by yourself!

Ooooh…I’ve never heard of jog.fm- looking into it right now! Thanks. (:

  11. katie i’m so glad your blog is back! it was stressing me out on your behalf when you were having tech troubles. as you know (given my incessant questions to you) i have no idea what i’m doing technologically so i’m impressed that you even tried all of this yourself. the blog looks AWESOME!

    • You subscribe to blogs through it and every time they post it comes up in your reader. It’s kind of like e-mail but with blog posts

  12. BABY!!!!!!!! YOU IMPRESS MEEEEEEEE! You switched by yourself!? PARDON MOI!?????????? IMPRESSIVE and I am so proud of you 🙂

ok YES my reader SCARES THE HECK OUT OF ME – especially lately due to my travels and lack of internet :'( AND NOW WITH SCHOOL STARTING!? I don’t know how I’ll manage :'( I need to figure out a plan of action so I don’t feel this stressed ALL OF THE TIME! Blog reading should not be stressful! Anyyyyways – loving that I am one of the reads awaiting you in your reader HAHAHAHHA that made me laugh so hard. hahahaha.

I am really happy you read outside of school! I wish I set time aside for myself to do that! I am so proud of you! I would love a review on that book because it sounds like something I’d love 🙂

    LOVE YOU

    • Very true, blog reading should be fun! I’ve got to figure out a game plan for how to read them, as well as have time to comment on as many as I can! And THANK YOU MEG! You are the sweetest, most supportive friend, I love you too!
