Summary: A lawmaker from the state of Texas has filed a bill that if turned into law would establish a new law school within the state for the Valley.

Texas lawmakers are just months from meeting in Austin, but they have filed bills they hope will one day turn into laws, according to valleycentral.com.

One of those bills was filed by Texas State Rep. Eddie Lucio III, a Democrat from San Benito. Lucio filed legislation that would create a new law school in the Rio Grande Valley.

The closest law school to the region is located in San Antonio. Lucio hopes that the legislation, if turned into law, will provide more access to legal services in the border region of the state.

“Our friends and family simply do not have proper access to legal services that are traditionally available in other areas of the state and nation,” Lucio said in a press release.

Lucio also said that the attorney to citizen ratio in the Valley is much lower than the national average.

Monday, November 4 was the first day of bill filings for the 84th Texas Legislative Session.

Some of the other bills filed include a statewide ban on texting while driving and driving permits in Texas for people who are in the United States illegally.

The session will start on January 13 and not all of the bills filed will be considered and voted on during the session.
