As US Law Firms Shed Lawyers, Pro Bono Work Is Up

Pro bono work for the poor and disadvantaged, performed by signatories to the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, increased by 558,400 hours, or 13%, in 2008, despite an economic recession that caused the shutdown of several law firms and thousands of layoffs.

The Pro Bono Institute 2008 Challenge Report showed that in 2008, 134 of the nation’s largest law firms performed 4,844,000 total hours of pro bono work, as compared to 135 firms that performed 4,285,684 hours in 2007, an increase of 13%.

Not only has the number of pro bono hours donated by firms grown dramatically since 2007, the number of lawyers performing those hours has increased as well. In 2007, 17,500 partners and 29,600 associates participated, while in 2008, 19,100 partners and 33,900 associates participated, an over 12% increase in participation.

There are 145 signatories to the Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, which was developed by law firm leaders and corporate general counsel.

Established in 1996, the Pro Bono Institute is a nonprofit organization with a mandate to explore and identify new approaches to the poor and disadvantaged unable to secure legal assistance to address critical problems.

  1. I am so in dire need of a pro bona law firm that handles criminal cases, that is in the San Bernardino county area My teenage son called the police on my fiance who is on parole and he did nothing and said nothing to my son (17) and little brother (15) about “killing them with a knife”,The police and the D.A. office scared my son up with the word “pergury” he is mentally slow and dont fully understand the line of questioning-he wanted to drop the charges and put in a statement with the D.A. to do so,I don’t no what happen to that statement. In the police report it is stated that myself and my lil brother gave a statement to the police and that is not true! all parties involved who is my 22yr old brother statement is not in the report either.Because of my fiance criminal past as a teen and very young adult he is 33 now, Thier trying to stick this “terriost threat” charge on him, And he is looking at 5-25yrs for something he did not do. The Public Defender is no help in finding out all the details of what happen that day 7-7-09! and is hard to contact-We beleive that he the Public Defender and the D.A. is working together to put him away because of his past they want him to take a deal of 5 yrs. What can we do in this matter? Please pass this alone to someone that may can help with advice. Thanks! kateyezkeke@yahoo.com
