Summary: A new dean has been named at Washington and Lee University School of Law as Brant Hellwig takes over in July of this year.
Brant Hellwig has been appointed as the new dean of the Washington and Lee University School of Law, according to a press release from the school.
The appointment was made by University President Kenneth P. Ruscio and Hellwig takes over the position on July 1, 2015.
Hellwig takes over for Nora V. Demleitner, who announced this week that she is stepping down at the end of the school year.

Hellwig is a member of the law school’s faculty and has been teaching there since 2012. Hellwig teaches tax law classes including Corporate Taxation, Partnership Taxation and Estate and Gift Taxation.
Hellwig has served two years as the chair of the Faculty Appointments Committee and has been a member of the Board of Trustees task force to develop the school’s strategic transition plan.
“I am delighted that Professor Hellwig has agreed to accept this appointment and have the utmost confidence in his ability to lead the law school during this critical time,” Ruscio said. “I look forward to working with Professor Hellwig and the entire law school community to ensure that the School of Law remains a defining feature of Washington and Lee.”
University Provost, Daniel A. Wubah, said, “Professor Hellwig has a clear understanding of our law school’s mission, character and goals. Both he and Dean Demleitner will have the full support of the faculty and administration during the transition.”
Hellwig earned his law degree from Wake Forest University. He has practiced with Bell, Davis & Pitt, P.A. in North Carolina and earned his LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law.

Hellwig clerked for the Honorable Juan F. Vasquez of the U.S. Tax Court.
“W&L School of Law is a truly remarkable place. When Ruscio announced Hellwig’s appointment, he said, “I would like to express on behalf of the entire Washington and Lee community our deepest appreciation to Dean Demleitner for her contributions these last three years.”
