Alrighty.
Apparently I’m running the Phoenix Rock N Roll Half marathon on Sunday!
So this is happening.
HA.
Here’s the thing about this half marathon – if it were in Chicago I probably would have pulled out ages ago, but since I’m going for the experience and to hang out with some of my awesome roomies from Healthy Living Summit, I’m going to give this a go!
The last time I ran a half marathon was a year and a half ago: The Chicago Rock N Roll Half Marathon the summer before running the Chicago Marathon.
However, a lot has changed since then, the biggest being my IT band injury. It is definitely still a big problem and I haven’t run for weeks because of it. Let’s check out my Daily Mile, shall we?
Quality training, yes? No. So… here are my goals!
1. Finish the race: Whether it’s running or walking (probably walking a lot) my dream goal is to finish the race and get my medal! I certainly paid for it…
2. Don’t make my injury considerably worse: I have a big relay race at the end of March and after this half I’m hoping to take another week or two off to completely focus on recovery and hopefully I’ll be able to get back into running and training for this relay.
3. Be okay with a DNF: I might have to pull out of the race (see #2) and I have to be okay with that. I tend to be pretty stubborn so it’s hard for me sometimes to quit halfway through, so one of my goals is to be okay with it if it happens!
4. HAVE FUN! Self explanatory. I’m going to Phoenix to visit friends, not run a race. The race was just an excuse to go down there! So my big goal for the weekend is to enjoy my time in Phoenix with my blogging buddies.
Ladies, HERE I COME!
p.s. Did I mention my flight leaves at 5am? That means I’ll be up at 2:45am… when most of the city is still out drinking. Yep…
What’s the earliest flight you’ve ever taken?
What would you recommend I do while in Phoenix? And yes, I’ve seen the Grand Canyon!
Awesome and good luck!! Really admire your positive outlook and determination to set realistic goals.
Earliest flight might not be as memorable as the most confusing flight time.. international time zone differences, weather changes, gate changes and delays all while trying to head back to the states on a 20+ hr. flight from China. I think I stayed up 36 hours with periodic 30 hr. naps.
Enjoy your trip!
and…of course when I said 30 hr., I meant 30 min. (oops)
HAha 30 hour naps sound lovely!
Good luck!! I know how it feels with the whole IT band thing AND being stubborn and wanting to finish no matter what. Having fun is definitely the most important 🙂
Thanks, Alanna!
Good luck! Most importantly, I hope you can finish without a ton of pain. Are you going to tape your knee? Maybe it’ll help?
Also have a blast visiting!
I used KT tape and I think it helped. I tried the tape you gave me but it just felt really off, maybe it wasn’t correcting the right issue?
How exciting! I did a half on minimal training, dreaded it but actually really enjoyed myself! Put no pressure on myself timewise, just wanted to do it! So I hope you really enjoy yourself and the spontaniety! Good luck 🙂
That’s what I love – races for fun with no time pressure!
Considering the Grand Canyon is 3+ hours away from Phoenix…although, if you want to go skiing you could do the 2+ hour trip to Flagstaff 🙂
Anyway, run/walk smart! And have fun!
Ah I LOVE Flagstaff, my best friend went to college there and I visited often (we also went to the Grand Canyon) haha so I think I have most AZ activities checked off!
I think your goals are great. They are realistic and reasonable, and that’s what counts right now.
I’m currently totally forgetting what food intolerances you have, but I would certainly try to go to Oregano’s if you can! Best pizza, pasta, salads, and pizookies around! 😉
Haha no gluten for me, but I did have some delicious gf pizza while I was there!
Hope you’re already in bed right now. Rest up and have fun. Enjoy the warmer weather
I was definitely in bed at 8:15! Not quite asleep but attempting it!
Have fun and good luck!!
Thanks, Katy!
I’m guessing you’re running right now … hope it goes well. Love your realistic goals – in situations like this it’s all about making the most of it and knowing your body!
Thanks, Megan!
Sounds like you have awesome realistic goals! =) more power to you!!!
Thank you!
I hope it went well–I think I saw a medal on ya on IG, so I am crossing my fingers you made your goals!! 😉
You’ll find out tomorrow – but I definitely crossed that finish line!
[…] Let’s take a look at my goals for the race again: […]
