Lessons

Hej.

My weekend at home was emotional. It was exhausting. It was activity-packed. It was rewarding. It was great.

I learned a lot this weekend, from my family and friends and from myself…

I learned that sometimes there’s no need to be “appropriate.”

I learned that I CAN sit through an entire Super Bowl football game.

I learned that making it to the gym is not always a high priority.

I learned that taking the time to center yourself in the morning can make all the difference.

I learned that you should always go through your old stuff before tossing it out, you never know what kind of gems you’ll find.

I learned that our parents never really grow up.

I learned how important it is to focus on other helping people instead of yourself.

I learned you should always drop what you’re doing and say “yes.”

I learned that your family and the friends who have become your family should be cherished and appreciated every chance you get.

I learned what kind of person touches the lives of thousands, and can only hope that I am a fraction as compassionate as she was.

I learned to pay attention, to treat every person with respect, to be present.

What do you think should be added to this list? What should we all learn and try to remember?

Fill in the blank: I learned ______.

  1. To more or less plagiarize Robert Frost: In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on. Or, to plagiarize Gary Allen: Every storm runs out of rain. Every dark night turns into day. Every heartache will fade away.

All of these things are so, so, so hard to keep in mind when you’re in the storm, the dark, dealing with the heartache–and I’d like to add that I think its important to be present with your emotions in the storm/dark/heartache, to allow yourself to process what you’re dealing with and work through it–but I also think it’s exceptionally important to remember that even when you feel as low as possible, things WILL get better, just like they have every time you’ve been hurt before. It may change you, it may alter who you are as person, but your pain, at least in its worst and most overwhelming form, won’t last forever.

  2. your parents are SO CUTE! and i TOTALLY agree with you on the whole saying yes when opportunities come up – that’s sometimes when i do the most fun stuff! not being afraid to change plans is something i’m really working on right now. love these lessons.

    • Definitely a lesson that I learned my second year of law school and so glad that I did, always say yes! Haha okay maybe not ALWAYS.

  3. This is a GREAT post!! I love it–plus it also helps us get a peek into who you are 🙂 Cute pics of your parents!!

I’ve learned that the only one who thinks about me & it actually MATTERS is GOD –what thinks is the only opinion I should ever care about 🙂

  4. I’ve learned that I can make mistakes and the world won’t end…i’ve also learned that I needed to read this post right now and use your words/reninder to reshape my day. Thanks girl!

  5. I’ve learend the last few weeks that if you’ve given something you’re best effort, that’s all you can do. It doesn’t help to worry about it when you know you’ve done everything you could!

BTW: LOVE “For Good”!! We sang that for chorus at my high school graduation. What an emotional time to sing that song 🙂

  6. Great post, Katie! I love the one about how working out isn’t always a priority! So true and something we forget sometimes : )
I learned that SLEEP makes everything seem easier/better.

  7. This is a great post! I’ve learned a ton in the past few years. Here are just a few of the things.
-never give up what makes you who you are, use it to your advantage
-sometimes skipping a workout and eating junk food is necessary and you won’t fall off track completely if you don’t want to
-it’s ok to ask for help
-if you keep working at something, no matter how many times you fail, you WILL succeed
-people will disappoint you, but the people that are there for you will far outweigh those people
