New York Lawyers Advertised for Business in 1911

Invoice_Fotor

Summary: Who would have thought that lawyers would need to advertise for business? Well, in 1911, that was the case in New York City.

We have stumbled across a brief, very brief, article from a newspaper in New York. The article, which is more of an advertisement, comes from a 1911 publication of the newspaper. It talks about the lack of business for lawyers in the New York area.

We have embedded the picture of the newspaper ad in this post, but in case you are having trouble reading what it says, we have the content for you below:

1911 newspaper ad

“Hard times have beset many lawyers in Manhattan and the Bronx, according to the report of the Membership Committee of the New York County Lawyers’ association, which tells of the dropping of 680 members for non-payment of dues. The dues are only $10 a year but one-forth of the lawyers dropped, it is said, frankly confessed that they were unable to make more than a bare living.”

This is quite hard to believe, that lawyers were not able to pay the $10 annual membership fee. To remove close to 700 lawyers from the association is quite a large number, even back in 1911. It just goes to show how much times have changed over the years.
