Hey everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend! I certainly did! As I mentioned Sunday, I didn’t run the Muddy Monk Double Down 10k, so my Saturday was slightly less hectic than I’d anticipated. I still had our Chicago Blogger Book Club and my law school prom to go to!
Before I get started, I just wanted to say GOOD LUCK LINDSAY!!!!! She’s running the Boston Marathon today and we are all so proud of her! She works so hard and has been so excited to run Boston (and qualified the past two years!). Send her speedy vibes!
Book club this month was hosted by Sierra. The group was a little smaller than usual (we were all missing Lindsay), but we still had a great time! Obviously there was a delicious spread of food:
I brought this Lemon Herb Cauliflower Bean Dip from Edible Perspective. I had to buy fresh herbs for this thing… haha but it was actually really quick and easy to make!
Sadly the only picture of actual people I came away with from book club was this one…
Typical.
Our book this month was called The Life You’ve Imagined by Kristina Riggle.
The book centers around three childhood friends, one who stayed in their hometown and the other two return. The story centers mostly around Anna, who has returned from Chicago on a leave of absence from her big law firm job due to the loss of a close friend. She discovers that her mother’s store is being threatened by an upscale development. Her friend, Cami, has also been forced to return and live with her abusive father due to her own gambling addiction. Finally, Amy worked for years to drop a significant amount of weight and begins the book obsessed with staying thin and striving for perfection.
Throughout the book each woman grows in her own way, as expected in such a book. I really enjoyed reading each woman’s story, although I have to say that I didn’t LOVE all the characters. I got annoyed with some of their personal choices and found myself thinking, “Nooooo!!! Don’t doooo it!” several times throughout the book. The ending wasn’t exactly what I expected, but it made sense for the characters. A few stories were tied up too perfectly, and others were somewhat disappointing, although perhaps realistic. I think this is a good book if you need a quick beach read, but not one of my favorite stories ever.
And now what I’m sure you’ve all really been waiting for: Law School Prom.
It’s actually called the Barrister’s Ball, but we all know what it really is. The event was held on a boat cruise that left out of Navy Pier, so after book club I headed over to Kelsey’s, hung out a bit, and got ready there since she lives closer to the Pier than I do. She was so kind to force me into some awkward pre-prom shots… with backdrops.
Really working that arm pop… After leaving Kelsey’s, I cabbed it to Navy Pier (heels, people) and met up with my friends for a very fun night.
There was food (little of which I could eat), an open bar (much of which I could drink, great combo, right?) and even a casino!
We were all given a certain number of chips at the beginning of the night and my friend, Bre, and I had an amazing time playing Black Jack. I’d never played at a table before so this was a great introduction without the intimidation of a real casino.
I’m glad that I got nostalgic and decided to go to my last law school prom, it was a really fun night!
What was the last “prom” you went to?
What would you make if you were going to a potluck today?
Have you ever gambled in a casino?
that casino idea sounds super fun! i never want to gamble because i’m too cheap and i’d rather spend money on food (lol whatever, it is what it is) but that sounds like an awesome way to break into it. you looked so PRETTY AHHHHHHH i’m happy you had a good time and hope that the lack of food/amount of drinks didn’t make you have too rough a day on sunday 🙂
Aww thanks! Haha and I made sure to hydrate, I was alright on Sunday!
Aw I LOVE your dress! Law school prom- that sounds like a lot of fun 🙂
Thanks, Sarah!
you looked beautiful! my college senior formal was the last “prom” I went to and it was so much fun!
We had sorority formals in college, I loved them!
I LOVE you had law school prom.
We had barristers ball and it was SO FUN getting all fancied up as…well…I never do otherwise 🙂
It was very fun to see everyone all dressed up!
Love your dress! Every time I go to my bf office Christmas party, I feel like it’s prom. They had a casino theme last time, btu I was too chicken to pilau any tables 😛
Oh that’s so fun! I hope I have awesome office parties in the future!
I love that picture of you guys walking! I’m glad that you had a good time!
My last prom was my high school senior prom. I didn’t have a date, so I went with a group of friends. It was pretty…blah. I think high school proms are so overrated, but maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more if I had a date?
I didn’t even go to high school prom!
The spread at your book club looks really good, i’m sure it was all much better than the food you couldn’t even eat at the ‘prom’. I like the idea of the casino, I wish my bf’s law prom we just went to had one, it would have been fun!
Haha way better than the prom food!
Looks like a great weekend! I love black jack but limit the Amt I’m allowed lol. And I’ve only gotten to play a handful of times. Last prom? My chi omega sorority formal way back in the day!
Great memories. Glad you decided to go.
Haha well it was fake money, so I went wild! And I miss sorority formals!!!
You look lovely in your prom dress and I think you have the arm pop down perfectly! 🙂
Aw thanks, Jemma!
I love your red dress – Navy Pier is one of my favorite places to visit in Chicago. I’m glad you had a lot of fun, my senior prom was casino themed…such a classic.
I love anything casino themed, it makes it more fun!
That sounds like fun! Who says prom is just for high school 😉
I’ve been to casinos a handful of times, but I stick to slot machines. I’m a lot more comfortable on a penny slot than I am throwing bills down at a table…I sat with my friend while she lost $60 in about 5 minutes. Definitely scared me off!
Haha I’ve only done slot machines at real casinos too!
Oh what a lovely event! That “prom” looks so much fun and your dress is so pretty! Last one I went to was either The Jr League Charity Ball last year (does that count?) OR, a little more “prommy” would have to be my sorority formal back in college.
Junior League balls totally count!
OMG MY EYEBROWS LOOK HORRENDOUS!!!!!! Ugh so disgusted.
You looked SO FAB!
I’m pretty sure you’re the only one who noticed.
Katie you looked SO pretty! Well, you always do. I seriously love your blog so much 🙂
That’s so sweet, thank you, Emma!
Your dress looks so great on you! And that sounds fun… I want to go to a law school prom!!!
Thanks, Carly!
It’s been way too long since I’ve been to a “prom”! Maybe my wedding two summers ago? Well, actually we attended a wedding last summer, and I wore a fun dress . . . so that sorta counts. 🙂
Haha that totally counts!
Last “prom” event would have been some formal in college! That bean dip looks good, even if you do have to buy fresh herbs ha!
it was really good!
I’m headed to law school in the fall, and I think the Barrister’s Ball is such a funny tradition. The old saying of law school being just like high school is true, huh? 😛 By the way, you looked great for your “prom”!
omg yes, law school is EXACTLY like high school, especially your first year!
You look gorgeous! That dress is stunning on you. Good choice :). My last prom was three years ago, in high school. Ah, memories…
Thanks, Carly! Oh geez, three years… Three years ago I was about to graduate college!
You looked gorgeous girl! Looks like a fun night, too 🙂 my last prom was senior in high school…7 years ago…holy crap now i feel old. I’ve never gambled before at a casino but we are going to a fundraiser at one in two weeks, so i’m both excited and nervous. Joe says he’ll teach me the basics ahead of time but I’m still intimidated by the thought!
Haha seriously, it makes me feel old too! And learn craps, that’s the one that seemed the most exciting but I had NO idea what was going on!
Law school prom – FUN! I haven’t been to a “prom” since high school but I had quite a few formals with my sorority in college 🙂 And yes, I have gambled in Vegas before! My husband gave me $50 to gamble (because I’m too scared to use my own money!) and I ended up winning $150 at a roulette table!
Ah I miss sorority formals! And that’s awesome that you won at roulette!! that must have been so exciting!
You look so pretty in that dress! Much more comfortable looking than the prom dresses that we had to wear in high school. I like how laid-back and fun your prom seemed. That’s totally my kind of thing.
You had to wear uncomfortable dresses?!?
Well, in my opinion anything strapless and hard to walk in is uncomfortable. Lol.
aww how fun! I didn’t know there was law school prom but it looks like a blast!
I think most law schools have a Barrister’s Ball!
You look so pretty!! I love nights out where it’s time to just relax & have fun–sure looks like you did–yay!!
Love your dress! My high school prom was actually at Navy Pier – what a coincidence 🙂 And I also had my grad school prom (we used the same term) this weekend! Ours was at Soldier Field – a pretty cool venue as well.
I love your dress!
Law School Prom sounds like a blast! Also, I hope your friend Lindsay is safe and sound in Boston!
I’ve actually never been to any type of prom. I decided my junior and senior year in high school not to go since I didn’t have a boyfriend or date. I actually don’t regret it though! I was never a fan of awkward school dances 😉
[…] whole evening turned out to be a lot of fun, and I finally got to wear my red dress from prom again! What’s not to love about […]
