Thursday Thoughts

Good Morning everyone!!! I hope you’ve all been having a good week, mine’s been… alright. Haha studying and lots of stress, BUT I’ve gotten to see some friends a few times, so that’s always a highlight. Anyway, I have phyiscal therapy soon, so let’s get on to today’s Thursday Thoughts!

1. I’ve had some obnoxious blog issues, I couldn’t access my blog or dashboard all Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Turns out it is the internet in my apartment? I went to my brother’s apartment to post on Wednesday (and see molly…). In case you had similar issues and missed anything, here’s my recap from my weekend in Charleston, and yesterday’s WIAW Grocery Store Staples.

2. I love when Kelsey’s posts begin like this:

3. On Thursday I went to Yoga Loft with some of my fellow blogger friends to try out a class that Kelsey loves. It was only 45 and the time FLEW by! Our instructor was so enthusiastic and really kept our energy up. It was called Yoga Core Sculpt, but incorporated cardio moves to keep our heart rates up and PLENTY of core. We couldn’t stop tweeting about it…

4. After Yoga Loft, we went to the Protein Bar and I got the Spinach Pesto Bowl (with chicken). It was SO GOOD!!!! I love pesto.

5. I won some Teavanna Tea from A Dash of Meg and it came yesterday! It’s a berry-peppermint flavor and I love it! I’m trying to find some new kinds of peppermint tea for my stomach.

6. I finally dug all the shoes out of the bottom of my closet. I’m pretty sure they’ve been multiplying in there… I had NO IDEA there were this many… Back row is donate/recycle, front row is keep.

photo 1 (14)

A) Probably had these since High School, these were my wear when I knew they’d get dirty shoes

B) I had no idea I used to own Mizunos! First pair of “running” shoes during 1L

C) Adidas – too wide in the toe box, learned I was a narrow.

D) Brookes – I remember liking these but one of many pairs that blend into my memory

E) Saucony – same as above

F) Asics – got me through most of marathon training!!! Hard to say goodbye.

G) Newest – Mizunos

H) Brookes – sent to me by the company, I haven’t had much of chance to run in them but I walked a lot in them, little wide in the toe box despite being a narrow

I) Marathon Shoes. Might save these forever… Shadowbox? haha

J) Reeboks – got from attending the Healthy Living Summit

K) JAZZERCISE SHOES! Yes, Rykas are sold on the Jazzercise site.

7) Speaking of running shoes, I tried running again yesterday for the first time in forever… Didn’t go great at all. I stopped at 3 because I could feel both my IT bands start to act up, I also ran/walked it. It was frustrating. My hip hurt and my feet felt so off: my right foot felt padded and good and my left foot felt like there was no padding in my shoes… Recommendations? Doctor types? Help.

8) On Tuesday I never left my apartment. I literally locked myself in until I finally finished my research paper at 8pm. It was awful. There may have been a 3 hour window of watching Dawson’s Creek and rebelling against school. But I got it done.

When I sit down to write a research paper for my seminar class.

At first:

Ten minutes later:

Spot On.

9) I found this quote and felt it applies to finals (and everything). It basically says you get out of life what you put into it. So I need to put some good, hard work into studying for 1.5 more weeks if I want to do well, almost done!

Do you have a hard time buckling down and getting work done? I think this is called senioritis…

Do you have all your old running shoes?

    • um YEA you need new shoes! Look at the bottom and if the tread is worn down you need new ones. Or every 300-500 miles (depending on weight) or every 6 months!

  1. Hey Katie,

I’m also currently in physical therapy for IT band issues (largely due to switching to a minimalist shoe toward the end of half marathon training and lack of proper rest days) but it’s been going on since the end of September. Every time I thought it was getting better, I’d try to run and I’d be right back in the same boat. Finally my physical therapist recommended doing ASTYM therapy since it’s been proven effective in resistant cases. I’ve only had one session so far (it sort of feels like foam rolling on crack) but I’ve noticed a lot of mobility improvements. Something to think about if you haven’t tried it already. Believe me, I know how annoying not running when that’s all you want to do!

    • I tried looking that up but I couldn’t figure out exactly what they do, because I might already be doing that. Is that where they use a hard plastic tool and rub it along your muscle and ligament where it’s tightest?

      • Yep, that’s it. I’m two days post first treatment and I’m noticing a huge improvement- especially in my mobility. The leg is sore and I’m a little bruised but it’s the first time in months that I’ve felt some hope, lol. Plus, they encourage you to be active while receiving astym.

  2. I can relate to this post in so many ways! First – finals, ugh. I can’t wait to be done tomorrow! Good luck with yours girl. 🙂

And I feel your frustration about not being able to run. It seems like no matter what I do lately, my knee hurts. Even the elliptical causes it to act up! I got a referral to see an orthopedic doctor because I have really flat feet – maybe it would help to get your feet checked out to see if you need inserts or orthopedic shoes?

  3. Love the shoe collection! I just got rid of several pairs at the marathon expo in October. Good luck with these last few days of finals! I totally understand the feeling…I just finished up with finals and seriously am SO ready to be done. I graduate with my Master’s degree in May and can’t wait. I’ve been seriously considering starting a countdown now 🙂

  4. Yay Dawson’s Creek! Rewatching that show is seriously eating up a huge chunck of my free time right now but we’re almost done!

I only have 4 pairs of running shoes right now but over the summer I pulled out an additional 7 that I ended up donating. My apartment is not big enough to hold that many shoes!

Hang in there, you’re almost done!

    • haha it’s taking up my time too, and I shouldn’t be watching it! I realized I’ve only seen a few random episodes, I’ve never really watched it!

  5. The tea sounds awesome! I am soo sorry about your IT band/ running pain…I had IT problems all through highschool, and in fact, my left IT band frequently goes numb, so I feel your pain and hope you figure it out! Also, those gifs about writing a paper could not be more true!

    • Haha that’s always how I feel studying. Like right now I’m “working on an outline” and responding to comments every couple minutes…

  6. Ive been eating a lot of pesto lately too. I made a pesto blt on paleo bread the other day. It was so good… Also I hope I can get some new readers to check out my blog, Im hosting a chobani greak yogurt giveaway!

  7. Mmm I love pesto too!

Wowee! That’s a lot of shoes! If I kept all of my running shoes over the years, I’d probably have that many too. Currently I think I have three pairs of tennis shoes in my closet… Brooks for running/walks, Nikes for casual or weight lifting, and some old Asics that I’m having a hard time parting with.

  8. I have a similar yoga class that I attend here in Minneapolis! It is called Yoga Scult. I love it. I never use to be a procrastinator but now I feel like I don’t get anything accomplished until the lat minute – SO stressful! Good luck with your finals, you’ll do great 🙂

  9. ahhh you’re so close to the end of the semester! good luck!! Keep resting that IT band – don’t push through pain. I can’t believe how many shoes you have! My apartment is so small I don’t have space for that many, I always just donate them right away. I wish I kept a lot of them though to see how many I go through. It’s crazy!

    • Lol I have a big closet because you have to walk through it to get to the bathroom, and they were all just down there underneath my hanging clothes!

  10. Hahahahaha! I like the curtains comment on your twitter there! Made me crack up! And you have a lot of running shoes! More running shoes than I have total shoes in fact. Though, I had to get rid of a bunch after foot surgery. It’s good to clean it out though. I’m not a runner, so I don’t have running shoes. I have my all-purpose athletic shoes, which are barefoot Merrell’s that I love for sprints, jumping around at the gym, and any crazy classes I take that require shoes. Senioritis seemed to kick in for me every year midway through! Good luck with your last push! You can do it!

    • Oh goodness, you don’t even want to see the rest of my shoe collection… Which is weird because I rotate between the same 3 pairs: boots, ballet flats and tennis shoes.

  11. i always struggled to buckle down but somehow you always do it, that is what I remember. I am a shoe hoarder too, I never want to throw away running shoes even though I should. i tend to go through a running shoe throwing away spree each year.

  12. WE HAVE THE SAME PURPLE MIZUNOS! Sorry, but I got really excited when I saw that haha 🙂 And that chicken pesto bowl looks amazing! And I had a huge case of senioritis starting sophomore year…problem…feel like it’s coming back too since I only have 12 work days left at my job until a new one…also a problem…

  13. I sooo want to try Protein Bar! That bowl sounds delicious.
I keep all my running shoes as well. I was just in my closet the other day and realized that I’ve got about eight running shoes in there!
I understand your frustration with your injury, they suck. here’s hoping things feel better soon!
I love that you took a Dawson’s Creek break while writing your paper. 🙂 I was so excited to find out it is now on Netflix!

  14. I assume you saw a sports medicine doctor about your injury? I highly recommend Dr. Sara Brown at Chicago Primary Care Sports Medicine. I also have lots of good PT recommendations if you need one. It doesn’t sound like your current PT is really helping all that much. Sometimes it takes going to a couple before you find one that really works for you.

As for shoes, that is a A LOT! If you have any that are in good shape that you won’t be using anymore I know a high school track and cross country team that could use them. I typically only have two or three pairs around because I donate my older ones.

    • I checked out Chicago Primary Care Sports Medicine and they don’t take my insurance 🙁 And I’ve only ever seen a PT, I’ve been going twice a week for about 6 weeks or so… And I can definitely give you the better ones! Should I bring them Sat?

  15. I’ve been wanting to trying yoga loft for a while now! That class looks awesome. Maybe we could
Meet up for a class there sometime

  16. WOW. That is a LOT of shoes! I have 2 pair right now, but I need to get a 3rd–probably today is when that will happen.

    I LOOOOOVVEEE pesto!!!

And yes, sometimes I just do NOT want to do what I have to do, so I usually procrastinate for like 5 mins, get mad at myself for putting off, and then buckle down & just DO IT. I have a tenacity & discipline that is kind of scary….. When I was a little girl, I’d come home from school & start my HW right away so I could play later. Literally. My mom never once had to tell me to do my HW ever in my life.

    I am a bit of a weirdo.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  17. Wow! That’s a LOT of shoes! I’ve got four total pairs of running shoes: Asics that I started running in (now only used for cross training — elliptical, biking, etc.), the New Balances that I’ve worn since last September, a pair of Mizunos that are too small and made my feet bleed, and a newer pair of Mizunos that I’m still feeling out to see if I like them. My hips felt weird after my first even close to long run (4 miles) in them, so I’m not sure that they’ll be good for me. I’ve been meaning to donate those other Mizunos forever and just haven’t gotten around to it…need to do that soon!

  18. Sorry to hear about your IT band. They can put such a damper on things! With mine I found that it was stretching, not foam rolling that made a world of difference. I stretched daily during PT (no running for like 8 weeks) and when it loosened up I stretched it before and after any type of physical activity. My favorite stretch is to stand and cross the right leg over the left and lean to the right reaching your right fingers toward the inside of your left foot (switch everything for other side). You should feel a good stretch down the outside of your left leg. I do 3 reps of 30 seconds on each side. One reason I like it is you can tell how loose or tight you are based on how close your fingers are to the ground.

Also, my PT made me introduce running way more slowly with only 1 mile at first and a 10% increase each week so only 1.2 the next week! Maybe rather than pushing it you should just run a mile a few times a week and see how that feels.

Keep trying things and you’ll get there! It’s been a year since I finished PT and I’m up to running 10Ks pain free!

  19. I am kinda new to running so am only on my third pair (prb don’t change them as often as I should)! Iamcurrently procrastinating studying…that quote is soooo true and tha episode of New Girl was hilarious.

  20. Yes, I HATE throwing out any old workout shoes. It’s bad. My husband keeps telling me I don’t need any new shoes since I have a million in my closet! Yeah, but I try to explain to him that they’re old & I don’t wear all of them… LOL.

  21. Hi Katie!!! I haven’t been around the blog world much, but now I need to go back and read about this physical therapy! I knew you were having some running issues from DailyMile 🙁 Bummer! I hope things get better soon. And I just finished my last final of the semester so I hope I now have more time to keep updated with my favorite blog girls!

  22. I procrastinate like crazy! When I first started grad school, I was living in Boston and would visit my parents in NY on weekends. Our weeks ended on midnight on Sundays for school and I would literally sit in my parents house until 11:59 finishing up my work- then drive the 4 hours back to Boston only to sleep an hour and go to work. So.glad.im.done. (And get my diploma In January!)
