Thursday Thoughts

Hey everyone! (laughing right now – see #3 below). Thursdays are my favorite day in Peace Love & Oats world because Thursday Thoughts is my giant brain dump and opportunity to share all random thoughts of mine with you all. I start putting together my Thursday Thoughts posts as early as Thursday afternoons the week before. I love it. However, honestly, some weeks I do it that morning! Depends on how active my brain is…

1. Kelsey (my favorite person in the whole world) gave me a little jar of Coconut Butter this weekend after I told her I’d never tried it. I am in love. And now I have a collection of wonderful gifts from Kelsey.

2. Um WHAT!? It was 59 degrees at 6:15 am on Tuesday here in Chicago. Talk about unseasonably warm! So weird. But don’t you worry, today the high is around 19 with wind chills tonight as low as –15. All is right in the world again.

3. I have something that I struggle with every single day. Greetings on my blog post. Seriously. I usually start off with “hey everyone” or “Happy _____ (whatever-day)” but I’m starting to feel like a broken record. #firstworldproblems I’m thinking for the next week I’ll start with salutations from various languages and countries. Salut!

4. You all know I love me some Kind Bars, but this was first time I’d gotten a chance to try Peanut Butter & Strawberry, and it did not disappoint. SO GOOD!

6. Yesterday I decided to try out a new lunch place near my school when I needed to grab a quick bite, Sataza. The concept is basically an Indian version of Chipotle, kind of like I Dream of Falafel, which is an AMAZING Mediterranean version.

I have to say, however, that I wasn’t a fan. I don’t like giving bad reviews, but I wouldn’t go back and wouldn’t suggest anyone else go either. I ordered the Chicken Tikka salad with Raita sauce and asked for carrots and tomatoes on top. They were a little… sparse with the toppings and it just didn’t taste great overall.

When I saw how little my salad was going to be I made a quick decision at the check out and ordered the masala potatoes (I was huuuuungry). I assumed they’d be like home fries but they were just french fries. Not bad, just a little greasy. The mango sauce on the side was good though.

Disappointing… At least now I know.

7. I have spelled “disappoint/disappointing” wrong several times in just this post. I keep trying to write “dissapoint”… shameful.

8. Today is the LAST DAY you can fill out my Peace Love & Oats survey, so get to it! I am LOVING reading all the results and will share them with you tomorrow. Well, not totally loving since apparently so many of you aren’t a fan of book reviews… :

9. I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I get an email every morning now called The Skimm and it basically gives you the low-down on all relevant news that day. So basically if you’re like me and don’t have a TV and don’t read about the news, then you don’t feel like an idiot when head into work/school and have no idea what’s going on…

What was a restaurant that you’ve been disappointed with recently? (spelled it wrong again…)

Have you ever tried coconut butter? Are you a fan? What’s your favorite nut butter?

    • I know, that’s why I’d never bought it! At Whole Foods they sometimes have those little 2T sized sample packs (kind of like the Justin’s Nut Butter ones). Maybe look for those?

  1. I really need to get my hands on some coconut butter. I’ve heard only great things about it, and I love coconut oil so I’m sure I’d love the butter too. I know what you mean about struggling to figure out how to start out posts every day… I do the same thing! Honestly though, I don’t think I even realize how other bloggers start out their posts every day. That helps me not worry about it so much when I’m writing my own. 😉

  2. I should get the skimm email, sometimes I feel out of it when i get to work/school and don’t know whats going on. I used to watch the news at night while doing school work but it just got to be too depressing sometimes. You should try your coconut butter on a sweet potato, so good!!

    • Oh I know how you feel! I love The Skimm though because they put it in simple terms and breeze through it so you get the jist of everything without getting bored (or depressed!)

    • Oh I LOVE almond butter, but it depends on what kind you buy! Most people prefer roasted over raw, haha raw can be a bit much for a first timer.

  3. This weather is absurd, though it’s really given me a chance to be an Equal Opportunity Coat Wearer. Rain jacket on Tuesday, pea coat on Wednesday, parka on Thursday — only my light fall coat and North Face were excluded! Haha.

I’m often tempted to try other kind of nut butters, but I can’t convince myself to swallow the price so I pretty much exclusively stick to peanut butter (and cookie butter 😉 ). I’ve tried Justin’s before and actually didn’t like it that much, so I’m not sure I’d be willing to make the investment on a real jar of almond butter. I didn’t realize Whole Foods ever sold sample packs of coconut butter, though. That’s tempting…

    • Hahahaha I love that – equal opportunity coat wearer! You should try TJ’s roasted almond butter, it’s like $5 for a jar so not too much! And with Justin’s I think it depends on the flavor (although I like all) some are better than others.

    • It’s basically blended coconut, just like you’d make peanut butter but with shredded coconut. It’s an interesting taste… kind of hard to describe. It’s not overwhelmingly coconuty though.

  4. i love coconut butter. it amazes me how many people are surprised by it…a coconut is a nut (i actually just researched this and it is a drupe, technically, but can be considered a seed, fruit or nut) like any other so why couldn’t you make butter out of it? yum it is so good. i eat that stuff with a spoon. oh and disappoint was the word i lost on in my middle school spelling bee so it still gives me nightmares 🙁

    • haha I was going to look that up myself! And yes, I most def eat it with a spoon too. Also, I’m so glad we both have issues with the word disappoint. Twins.

  5. Omgggg everyone now has coconut butter but me!! This is changing this weekend because i can’t take it anymore! Mm and i think the last restaurant i tried and was disappointed in was called up modern kitchen…took over the space of a place i really liked and i thought the food was ok but really over priced and the decor was loud and ehhh…might go try lunch one day but have no desire to return for dinner

    • Definitely give coconut butter a try! Although I recommend trying a small packet or small jar like mine first! And I agree – not a fan of over priced and loud

  6. I love the idea of an ‘Indian Chipotle’ but I’m disappointed to hear that it wasn’t better. Have you heard of Piada? It’s like Chipotle but with Italian food. I’m not a huge fan. It smells good and even looks appetizing but it made me SICK. Like, really sick. Maybe it was just a fluke but I haven’t been back since.

  7. Oooh I’ve never even heard of coconut butter. I love everything coconut so I’ll have to find it the next time I go grocery shopping. My favorite nut butter right now is almond butter. I put it on everything 😉

  8. Mmm coconut butter, most definitely a fan of it! I ran out quite some time ago though, so time to order a new jar and pronto 🙂 That’s too bad that restaurant/Chipotle-like place sucked! But glad you are being honest about it, it’s annoying when bloggers do reviews on restaurants that really are terrible but then feel bad about doing so and “lighten up” their review. NOPE I want to hear the honesty!
