Gooooood morning everyone! I hope you’re all having a great week! I can’t believe how quickly things are moving for me, after today I only have 1 week of classes left! That’s 3 weeks to graduation (and 3 weeks to the beginning of Bar exam prep…). Hopefully it will be August 1st before I know it! Aaaanyway, now that my time tangent is over, how about we get on to this week’s Thursday Thoughts?
1. Jealous much? A few of us saw a deal (living social, groupon, something?) for two of these shirts for like half off. I can’t remember, I was too excited. Everyone else opted to split the deal and each get 1 shirt. I refused to share and ordered two. Yep. The dinosaur t-shirt is by far my favorite and I die laughing when I wear it. Don’t worry, I’ve only worn it to book club and in my apartment so far…
2. Sarah wrote a great post on Monday about her love for Boston, the Boston Marathon, and her experiences last week. I was so impressed with how she was able to articulate her feelings and express the pride her city has.
3. My friend who lives in Denver is kind of obsessed with going to Goodwill and similar stores to find hilarious gifts. I received this lovely book in the mail yesterday:
At first I thought it was a self-help type book, like how to get a guy, but no, it’s a novel/chapter book. It’s hilarious. And published in 1985 (hence the hair…). Obviously it should be our next Chicago Blogger Book Club book…
4. I read this great article about the effect of social media (specifically using instagram as an example) on pre-teens and teenagers. I thought this was really interesting since I didn’t have facebook until I had a college e-mail address, but I can really understand the idea of “quantifying” your social worth.
5. In my school law class on Tuesday we watched an episode of Oprah from the early 90’s about religion in schools. When a woman was being interviewed she was saying something about sins and a girl next to me goes “the only sin here is that hairdo.” I burst out laughing for a solid minute. Well played. Well played.
6. On Tuesday I felt like I was getting sick so I headed to CVS and ended up putting a pharmacy in my purse… Currently okay, hoping it’s just allergies making me feel off… No time to be sick again.
7. I’m the secretary of my school’s Environmental Law Society (jealous much?) and we’re hosting a Trivia Night tonight as a fundraiser. I’m actually really excited about it because I’ve convinced Lindsay, Kelsey, Erin & Emily to come!
8. I love ending my Thursday Thoughts with a good quote, but this week I spent a liiiittle too much time on pic-monkey turning my friends’ images into quote pictures. How pretty are these? I’m obsessed.
I should spend less time on picmonkey…
Do you like trivia?
What do you think about the effect of social media on the younger generations?
oh i love trivia! particularly the pop culture categories because those are actually the only ones i’m any good at, but i like to be around other people who are good at trivia because i always learn something. those t-shirts are so funny and i’m going to need you to incorporate one into your future outfit posts – gotta see that snow leopard (is that a snow leopard?) in action!
It’s a white tiger, and yes, it should totally go into an outfit of the day. I mean really, so stylish!
That’s a really interesting article on social media. It introduced a lot of thoughts that I never considered. It really is crazy. Adults my age never consider life without such things, well, because we grew up with it constantly around us.
I do love trivia! I love any type of game that gets me thinking. My competitive side tends to come out, too. 🙂
Love the shirts by the way! Who can pass up a deal like that? I know I wouldn’t!
I definitely don’t think adults realize it, but I remember how many facebook friends I had or how many birthday messages I got on my wall was always a competition! Crazy.
It’s funny you mention that article about social media. I’m doing an entire research project for my research communications class about the effects social media have on girls’ body image. It’s really amazing how negative the relationship can be!
Oh wow, that sounds like a really interesting topic for your project!
OMGOSH I LOVE YOUR FRIEND.
I would have laughed outloud at the book.
Right? She’s the best. She sends me stuff like this all the time.
Aww I hope you’re not sick! Being sick sucks. 🙁
I think the younger generation is a little too dependent on social media. I once read an article somewhere that was saying how social media has depersonalized our world–instead of calling people, we write on their facebook walls or shoot them a tweet. Instead of meeting up with people to talk about important things, people text people about it. It’s a little sad how pervasive social media is in our society today, but I suppose that’s the heavy price that comes with its expansion. I do try to take a day where I step back from all forms of social media (and only blog once…I can’t help it!) just to enjoy the world and everything life has to offer.
Feeling better today! And I definitely think there are good and bad sides to social media – I’ve made so many (real life) friends through it and I love being able to easily keep in touch with people from high school and college, but again I spend too much time on my computer!
That idea to find hilarious gifts at Goodwill is too perfect. I now want to start doing that. And those shirts? Oh you should SO wear the dinosaur one walking around whatever the fancy shops street is in downtown Chicago. So should!
She finds the BEST gifts at goodwill, I always crack up when she sends them. Haha and I should definitely wear that shirt around downtown. Maybe wear it out at night? That’s how to pick up men…
haha i looooooove picmonkey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AH ME TOO!
I’m so pleased that two guys noticing this girl is considered a “miracle.” Poor girl must be a complete wall flower in her school.
Once in college my roomie and I found an old 80s health class textbook. It was awesome AND informative. Can’t get much better than that.
Hahahaha I love anything from the 80’s
That book!!! Too funny!
Haha seriously, she finds the best stuff at Goodwill.
Those shirts are hilarious! I can’t pick a favorite!
I know, right? It took me a MONTH to pick two!
Those shirts and book are hilarious! My sorority sisters and I frequent Goodwill when trying to find outfits to wear to themed socials. It’s such a blast.
YES, it’s the best place for mixer outfits!
Those shirts are awesome and the book… too funny!
Keeping it real over here 🙂
Laughing way too hard over those shirts… please do a post where you wear them out and have a friend secretly record people’s reactions.
Hahaha I should!
I work with pre-teens and the amount of issues I’ve run into that are caused by social media is horrid. It runs their lives (ours too , sometimes) and it seems to me, that it is robbing them of their childhood in some ways! I didn’t have facebook until I was in High School and that was only when you had to be in an approved network AKA HS or College. Personally, sometimes, I wonder if we all would have been better off if it had just stayed that way…
Good luck at trivia night!
Yea, I didn’t get it until I was a second semester HS senior because that was back when you had to have a college email address, and even at that point it had a huge effect on me during college. I wish we could just let kids be kids sometimes.
i agree with Ang@Nutty for Life – we need to see you wearing those shirts! I might have to look for the dinosaur one, i LOVE it! I hate to admit those hair do’s are from my time! the mullet was bad enough, but the female mullet should NEVER had been invented!
Omg the dinosaur one makes me laugh every time I see it!
Thanks for sharing my blog post Katie!! <3
It was a great post!
Don’t forget Loop Looks is coming tooooo!!
I love that you wore that to book club and there were new people there. I like to imagine what they think of you…
OMG I FORGOT!!!!! Oh loop looks! Editing my post NOW!
I have been using pic monkey a ton now (and have made a few quotes..)! This sort of came up over on Losing Weight in the City yesterday. I think social media tends to glorify peoples lives a bit, especially for teens. It’s kind of sad, seems like it makes them grow up too fast.
I agree, they grow up way too fast with all the exposure!
I read that social media story yesterday too! It was actually pretty interesting.
I always say I’m happy social media didnt really take off until after i was out of high school. I remember a couple people having MySpace my senior year in high school and I was like ‘what the hell is that?’ haha its crazy all these young people are on it now, definitely scary…
I agree, I can’t imagine growing up with all of this stuff!
YAY trivia!!! I’m so excited!!!!
Can we read that book next? It’ll be a great contrast to Stiff.
HAhahaha yes, it will be the perfect book.
Isn’t it great how we’re all making fun of the 90’s now? In my day it was the 80’s. God, I’m old …
I loooove trivia and useless knowledge! Too bad I can never remember anything under pressure, or I would totally rock Jeopardy!
Haha I loved the 90s and wish I’d been a teen in the 80s (I have the perfect hair).
😆 Oh good old 90’s hair-dos… I remember scrunchies. And butterfly clips. And wild poofy hair. Good times. And I adore that quote about dancing with God <3
Oh I totally rocked both scrunchies and butterfly clips! The good old days…
That was a really interesting article about social media! I can totally see that in my high school students. I try to talk to them about it, but who knows just how effective I’m being.
I can see it being frustrating to try and impact them with all of social media and their peers fighting back, but whenever I work with younger girls (or even my blog) I feel like I’ve accomplished something if I just help one person, just make one person think differently (more confidently) about themselves. I’m sure you’ve done that!
Kids and technology, as a teacher I can go on and on and on about this subject. I am always passing out studies and pamphlets about “unplugging” for my families to read. On a more awesome note, I loved this post! And, I especially loved the book and sweet dino shirts. Great way to start my weekend out. Thanks 🙂
