What’s Under Your Nose

You’ve all heard the classic friend-turned-romance love story, right? Boy meets Girl. Boy and Girl are friends for years, helping each other through life’s struggles and failed relationships. All the sudden Girl and/or Boy realize that somewhere along the way they’ve fallen in love.

My favorite example is the movie Made of Honor. Love the movie, love Patrick Dempsey. Anyone else?

Anyway, what I’m trying to get at is that we don’t always see what’s right under our nose, and often not until it’s too late. Well, unless you burst into the church riding a horse, steal back your girl and get punched in the face… (reference again to Made of Honor).

Sometimes we don’t see it because we’re just blissfully ignorant. Ha. NOT. Let’s be honest, we’re usually just scared. Scared of messing up what we already have and what we’re comfortable with, scared of what other people will think, or scared to tell the truth to ourselves. When did we lose that carefree attitude from childhood? That ability to leap without looking, having faith that everything will work out in the end. Somehow we developed this fear, a need to hold ourselves back with the restraint and dignity of an adult.

leap of faith

Another great movie reference is You’ve Got Mail. How after a while Meg Ryan realizes deep down that Tom Hanks is the guy from her emails and that she’s falling in love with him. She can’t, however, admit it to anyone, let alone herself, because she’s afraid of what people would think and afraid of taking a a leap away from what’s comfortable for her.

Sometimes we might build something up so much in our minds that we can’t tell what’s real and what isn’t, what’s right for us and what we just wish were right. But what if things don’t always end up like they do in the movies? What if months after the credits roll, Tom and Meg annoy the crap out of each other and break up?  When do you know when something is meant to be, or whether you just wish it were?

I guess you never know unless you make the jump.

What’s an instance in your life where you took the leap?

Anyone here in a relationship with someone who used to be a friend?

Anyone else love Made of Honor or You’ve Got Mail?

  1. You’ve Got Mail – LOVE that movie!! when i was in high school, my senior year i started dating my best guy friend who i had grown up with since kindergarten literally! it was great, but we went to way different colleges (across country), parted ways, and after college i met my hubs who i obviously love very much hehe

  2. Hmmm… are you trying to tell us something via code? 😉 I kid, I kid… You make such a great point, Katie! Too often we’re always looking for something when, if we just took the time, we could be happy with something that’s right in front of us!

  3. wow this post creepily related to my life all summer hah it really is an interesting thing to think about. I think so much of what holds people back is fear that things won’t work out, from experience, I know lol. I love Meg Ryan in you’ve got mail, such a good movie!

  4. I’m in the opposite situation. My ex and I broke up over the summer, but we’re still good friends. People always seem to think we must be getting back together since we still hang out, they can’t believe we’re just friends now.

Most of my friends are married so it would be awkward if I started datinf one of them.

  5. If this is in any way referencing your own life right now, go for it! I think some great relationships start as friendships, it just takes a little courage to change the status.
