WIAW–Grocery Staples

Soooo I’m getting a little bored of my What I Ate Wednesday Posts, aren’t you? They’ve been getting repetitive: sweet potato with eggs and avocado, stir-fry dishes with peppers, zucchini, spinach, carrots and TJ’s chicken sausage, protein ice cream, KIND bars, you know the drill. I was taking pictures for this week’s WIAW and realized it was going to be the exact same! Well, rather than subject you all to my food rut, I thought I’d change things up this week.

My dear friend, Kelsey, did a Grocery Store Staples post this week, and then informed all of us that she wanted to know what we all bought. So I figured this would be the perfect opportunity. Here are all the foods I’ve been buying consistently over the past couple of months, give or take a few items.

If you’re new to What I Ate Wednesday, head on over to Peas and Crayons to check it out!

What I Ate Wednesday Healthy Holiday Recipes

Spinach: ever since I found out I was iron-deficient I’ve been choosing spinach as my greens of choice, I usually sauté it by itself as a breakfast side, or mix it into a stir-fry type dish.

Trader Joe’s Chicken Sausage: Spicy Jalapeno is my current favorite and go through this stuff like crazy. I’ve been stressed out with school and everything else going on, so having this pre-prepared protein source has been a lifesaver. I do hope to switch things up come January though and be less dependent on these.

KIND BARS!!! Duh. These are my favorite gluten-free, soy-free (other than soy-lechtin) bars. They are delicious, I find them everywhere and there are tons of different flavors so I never get bored.

Condiments: These are always in my pantry – Stevia from Trader Joe’s, cinnamon, vanilla, sriracha, and cocoa powder!

Sweet Potatoes: I eat one every morning for breakfast! Although I have to be honest, I’m getting a liiiiittle bored of this breakfast, but it’s so easy and quick so it will be continuing until finals are over. Plus I’ll always love sweet potatoes.

Bell Peppers: Over the past year I’ve been slowly figuring out which veggies my stomach handles well, and bell peppers are one of them, so I buy this tri-color pack from Trader Joe’s. I have, however, decided to try and buy organic whenever I can find them.

Other veggies I can tolerate? Carrots and zucchini! These are always in my fridge.

Eggs: I used to be scared to eat whole eggs – I was an egg-whites only kind of girl. However with my anemia and some time, I realized whole eggs are great for me and keep me full so much longer. Two every morning!

Oats: I used to eat oats every single morning for breakfast, and even though I’m on a new sweet potato kick, I still always have these in my apartment and make them every week or so. They’re great as a quick grain when I’m throwing together a meal. And who knows, maybe I’ll be back on oats soon!

Peppermint Tea: I have lots of teas in my apartment, but peppermint is my new favorite. I used to hate it, but it really makes my stomach feel better so I’ve learned to love it! And yes, it tastes like toothpaste at first.

Flax Milk: I’ve been using this milk for almost a year, and so far it’s my favorite for mixing into anything. I know it sounds weird, flax milk, right? But I like it!

I guarantee you if I do this post again in 6 months, this might be totally different! That’s one thing I’ve learned since starting this blog, we all go through various food phases in our lives. I love looking back and seeing what I was in love with a year ago, or 2 years ago. Haha this list would be WAY different my freshman year of college!

Do you go through food phases?

  1. I love these posts and need to do one of my own soon! I most definitely go through food phases. Right now I’m on a big salad kick (shocker, I know but I’m going with it) and am loving waffles in the AM.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever tried flax milk but generally I’m an almond milk kinda girl.

    • I eat quinoa sometimes but not a lot, although my iron levels seem to be normal right now (or at least I don’t feel the side effects of low iron).

  2. I’ve been eating oats every day for breakfast for almost a year! I’m kind of waiting for the day that I realize I’m sick of them, but until then oats it is 🙂

  3. I’ve been on such a bell pepper kick lately, can’t get enough of them! I always have peppermint tea around too because my stomach gets wonky pretty often. I’ve been trying to switch up my breakfasts lately. I’m getting so bored with oats!

  4. Way to switch up the posts! Your grocery list looks a lot like mine, except I ALWAYS have bananas on there. I buy bananas whenever I go to the grocery store, even if I don’t need them. Weird? oh, and you can’t forget nut butters!

    • I used to use them a ton but I haven’t in the past couple months since I got regular eggs. They’re great for baking things though, especially individual mug cakes!

  5. It’s funny that you say you’re bored of WIAW because I was just thinking to myself how much I love reading everyone’s blogs on Wednesday… Because I love to see what they ate. LOL – is that weird??? Any ways, I am a SLAVE to TJ’s SPINACH! I literally go in there and buy 6 bags at a time… I also love their BUTTER LETTUCE and.. In the freezer section I love their Arctic Char & SableFish! 🙂 Oh and how can I forget their frozen pregrilled veggies! YUM-O! Oh no, I just pulled a Rachel Ray, lol.

    • Haha I love reading everyone’s WIAW, I just knew if I posted the food I ate again (as I was photographing it) it would be exactly the same as the week before!

    • I actually make them in the microwave! Baked is better, you can do it on the weekend and then re-heat it. But for the microwave, poke holes, wrap it in 1 or 2 damp paper towels, and then heat for about 5 minutes.

  6. I love seeing these! Always on the lookout for new things to add haha…I’m glad I’m not the only one in a bit of a food rut too…hard to be motivated to get crazy for myself right now…hopefully when the bf is home over the holidays we’ll have some fun in the kitchen 🙂

  7. I wish I had a TJ’s near me!! I love the sound of that chicken sausage. Spicy Jalapeno?! Come ON.

My life is a food rut. I feel like I eat nothing but eggs, oats, lentils, bulgur, quinoa, chicken, and turkey. Zzzzzzzz…..

    • Haha I know! I usually buy 4 sweet potatoes and then go back halfway through the week! It turns into too much to carry all the way home!

  8. Mmm, you’ve reminded me I need some sweet potato breakfasts back in my life! Just watch with the spinach, it does have iron in but also oxilates which can bind to minerals and prevent absorption so may be try rotating with other greens or eating with something high in vitamin C. http://www.livestrong.com/article/533800-does-the-oxalic-acid-in-spinach-inhibit-the-absorption-of-iron/ Apologies if you already know all this I just have my nutrition head on today 😉

  9. […] 1. I’ve had some obnoxious blog issues, I couldn’t access my blog or dashboard all Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Turns out it is the internet in my apartment? I went to my brother’s apartment to post on Wednesday (and see molly…). In case you had similar issues and missed anything, here’s my recap from my weekend in Charleston, and yesterday’s WIAW Grocery Store Staples. […]

  10. I love, love, love the cocoa powder, and spinach. My current staples are those plus natural peanut butter, soy or almond milk, peppers and egg whites. But maybe I’ll try some whole eggs soon
