WIAW–Sunday Style

Hey everyone, I hope you’re all having a good week! If you haven’t taken my blog survey, I’d really appreciate it, you can find it here!

For this week’s What I Ate Wednesday I thought I’d mix things up and do a weekend day! I have to be honest, it takes real focus for me to remember to take pictures of my food on any day other than Monday or Tuesday when I have a time crunch! So proud I managed this one.

If you’re new to WIAW, head on over to Peas and Crayons to see what it’s all about, and to check out the other blogs participating!

Peas and Crayons

I started off the morning with half a banana and coconut butter before heading to the gym. I ran 1.5 miles on the treadmill (after warming up on the elliptical), and then did my gym’s version of body pump. I wasn’t going to, but I was moving from the treadmill to another elliptical and I saw that they were about to start so I figured I should just go for it! SO glad I did, it was fun!

When I got home I was staaaarving, so I threw together a green smoothie with spinach, almond milk, peaches, the other half of my banana, xantham gum, stevia and Vanilla Sunwarrior Protein Powder (plus some ice cubes). I also had a slice of Udi’s GF bread with coconut butter and maple syrup on the side.

After breakfast, I made myself a mug of coffee and sat in my closet to do some reading for school. Why my closet? 1) It’s become my “quiet space.” I realize that makes no sense when you live alone, but the computer isn’t allowed and it’s nice and cozy. 2) It’s the warmest place in my apartment, especially when I set my space heater on the floor next to me.

2 hours later, I was hungry again. Seriously. I guess that’s what running + strength training does to you. I resisted for half an hour and then threw together this quick lunch: sliced baby carrots, “southern greens” from Trader Joe’s and 2 Trader Joe’s chicken sausages all sautéed in coconut oil, topped with a bit of salt and pepper. Served with ketchup to keep it classy.

If you noticed, I ate a LOT of sriracha and hot sauce before winter break, and now I’m eating ketchup instead. I found that all that spice upset my stomach too much, so I’ve given it up, to be enjoyed on occasion rather than all day…

After lunch I made some Honey Vanilla Chamomile tea and did some blog work.

Then, it was time to head to Whole Foods! First I stopped at my brother and sister-in-law’s apartment (well… I had to since I was borrowing their car), but it was nice to sit and chat with them for a while.

While at Whole Foods I picked my dinner up from the hot bar! This is what I do every Sunday, it’s my ritual! I go to Whole Foods and after shopping I grab a bunch of things from the hot bar for dinner. It’s the little things in life.

For dessert, I made some “peach sorbet” and served it along with some chocolates I also grabbed from Whole Foods. I made the sorbet in my vitamix, so unless you have one I won’t annoy you with the recipe, but it’s basically frozen peaches, a bit of almond milk and ice.

And after dinner, I had some tea that my friend, Caroline, gave me for Christmas (she’s the one I visited in San Francisco). A friend of hers, Sina, lives in San Francisco and owns Red Circle Tea.

Red Circle Tea

From her About Us page:

I’ve been studying tea for 8 years and my teacher is a 4th generation tea master who lives in China.

I personally travel to China twice a year to source fresh, seasonal, sustainable, hand processed small batches of tea. Not all teas are created equal, that’s why I source the highest grades of teas that cannot be found on the mainstream market. I work directly with Chinese farmers and encourage them to bring back heritage varietals of tea that are being lost to more commercially produced teas.

How cool is she?! Anyway, the tea Caroline gave me was Chrysanthemum and at first I thought this tea was a little odd, or that it wouldn’t really flavor the water, but I LOVE it. LOVE. Seriously. It just tastes so much more fresh than bagged tea. And it’s fun!

Seeing as I had dinner at 5:30… (insert age joke here), I was feeling a little hungry around 8:30, so I finished off my evening with another bowl of peach sorbet while watching Parenthood, my new Netflix addiction thanks to Janae.

Any weekend rituals that you have?

  1. we are TWINS.
since we moved to the…north Ive been freezing everywhere but our closet.
    it’s plushly 🙂 carpeted.
I hide up there with a book and my daughter and we snuggle.
    and get warm.

  2. Haha that’s so funny that you study in your closet!

My latest tv addiction was LOST, but I just finished the series on the weekend so I need something new to watch now. I’ve been wanting to watch Parenthood, so maybe that will be it!

My weekend ritual is to go to the indoor (or outdoor) farmer’s market followed by the grocery store on Saturday mornings. I love that it’s never busy at that time!

    • I’ve never gotten on the LOST bandwagon, but I’m considering it! Definitely try Parenthood, although very different from Lost! And I LOVE the farmers market, although I only go in the outside season.

  3. that peach sorbet looks awesome – and i have all the ingredients so i think i know what i’ll be having for dessert at some point in the near future. my vitamix is my new best friend. oh and you’re making me crave tj’s chicken sausage again. i went through a big kick but i’ve been off it – time to jump back on the bandwagon. and i definitely need to decrease my hot sauce consumption….my stomach isn’t a fan but my tastebuds! they love it so much!

    • I am obsessed with TJs chicken sausage, and I think because it’s so inexpensive and easy, aka I don’t have to cook it like other meats! (although I do sautee it… Haha)

  4. Hahahaha! I love the closet thing. Though, I’m picturing a tiny cramped closet, but yours looks spacious and wonderful! I have no weekend rituals but I’ve been have a once a week Karyn’s pizza ritual recently. Nom!

  5. Your closet does look quite cozy. I wish I had a little space like that. That peach sorbet sounds tasty!
I really like Parenthood too – it’s a great show. I started Downton Abbey a couple weeks ago and LOVE it. I am only on season two right now and am taking my time with it.

  6. Having a quiet spot is such a good idea! I live alone too but I feel I like I am definitely in need of a place where the computer is banned.

    • This solution has finally appeared to me after 2.5 years of trying to find a good computer-free spot that’s not sitting on my bed!

  7. Love your whole foods box! Those peas are calling to me!!

That sorbet looks awesome. And yes, sadly I have no vitamix 🙁 I’ve never watched Parenthood, but I LOVE Lauren Graham. Current TV Obsessions… Just some random stuff- Army Wives and anime on Netflix. A little Hulu stuff going on. But mostly movies, like Pitch Perfect which I’ve watched too many times to count in the past week 🙂

  8. Scandal! I can’t get enough of it! Although I just got the first season of homeland from netflix so that may be changing haha…mm weekend rituals include getting up early on saturday to hit trader joes and target! Best way to start the weekend in my mind 🙂

    • Haha my mom is watching Scandal! That’s smart to hit TJs early, I find if I go too late in the weekend it’s packed with people and understocked!

  9. I’ve been experiencing a lot of digestive issues and am considering doing “The Conscious Cleanse”. Brittany at “Eating Bird Food” is doing it and the food just looks so refreshing.
I really really consider Whole 30 but I’ve done extensive research and not sure I see a ton of peer-reviewed evidence on it. Plus, it seems like it might be too heavy for me.

While I don’t want to lose weight, I know I need a sensible (!) cleanse to “re-set” my body and then maybe be able to slowly tolerate mmore foods more easily. So I’m not sure between “The Conscious Cleanse”, “The Virgin Diet”, and “The Plan”, or “THe Ultrasimple Diet” or “Eat To Live”. Id love your thoughts. Thanks!!

    • Hey Tammy, I’ve actually never done or researched any of those cleanses other than Whole 30 so I really can’t give you an opinion on them! Have you considered seeing a nutritionist?

  10. I can’t tell you how much I want a vitamix! Do you love it?!? To me it seems like the perfect kitchen appliance. Considering one is equal to over an entire month’s rent and I am a poor college student, it looks like I won’t be getting one for a long time. Or if I win the lottery.

If I have a weekend day off, I love to wake up late, go for a run, and make a delicious breakfast I wouldn’t have time for on the weekend!

  11. I am loving that you do work in your closet Katie! Too funny, though I totally understand the comfort and ease it provides you with! Glad you are listening to what your body needs as well… with all the working out you are doing, fuel your hawt self 😉
