Sedgwick Detert to Cancel 2010 Associate Class

SedgwickIn what is undoubtedly going to be a major trend, Frisco law firm Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold is the first prominent firm to announce that it has entirely canceled new associate hires for 2010.

The firm says it simply cannot predict if it will need any new associates. It intends to skip only the one year of new associate hiring.

Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP is an international litigation and business law firm that provides counseling, risk management, litigation management, trial, appellate and transactional legal services to sophisticated corporate clients. Founded in 1933 as a three-person firm in San Francisco, Sedgwick now has more than 400 attorneys in offices around the world.

  1. It had better be a trend, or the firms that ignore it will be out of business. Law firms’ clients have long since taken prudent steps to reduce inventory to align with projected demand. Lawyers are the inventory of law firms. Why would law firms be exempt from sane business practices?

    I’m glad this appeared without the breathless, can-you-believe-it tone that attends so many of these recent announcements. This is “news” about as much as it would be news to announce that GM was making fewer cars now. Duh.
